Today in Space - July 16: Apollo 11 Launches to the Moon

I can't believe I almost forgot this. Way back in the mists of time, there was a movement to have July 20, the day of the lunar landing, declared 'Space Day.' Obviously, that failed; but, we do have Yuri's Night, April 12.

1. I remember being in an orchestra rehearsal when they landed on the moon.

We had TV set up to take a break and watch it,, or maybe it was a radio.

Actually it was teletype, I think.

2. I was in the Army in Germany on July 20,1969. I remember watching it with

about another 100 soldiers on a 19" TV set in our little EM Club at the border camp. That day the Germans gave us a party at the post and supplied us with beer, food and a band. We were giving the local kids rides around the camp on an APC. Fun day will never forget it.

3. I was away at summer camp!

My friend and I were in the right place at the right time and were invited into the nurse's cabin to watch it on her little TV. She knew how important this was! I'll always be grateful that I was able to see history!

4. I was 6 years old

and a massive space geek. I drank tang, ate space bars (even though the astronaut never used either). I had a fake space helmet and I G. I. space capsule.

My neighbor worked for Grumman aerospace and helped build the lunar module. He would bring home photos of the moon for his son and we (my family and I) would all look at them in awe.

I still remember watching the landing on TV with my parents. I still get get a little choked up when I think about it.

I knew, even at 6, how screwed up our country was, I had cousins and neighbors in Vietnam. but I still loved our nation.

The Apollo astronauts, as a kid, gave me hope for a better future. we seems so lost now, and hope is in very short supply.

I so wanted to be an astronaut, but never had the massive math skills needed.

I still dream of space.

5. It was a big deal in our house.

My grandfather was one of the many engineers who made it happen.

6. I have no memory of Apollo 11

I believe I was doing really cool things at the time, but I have no memory of them either.

If you can remember the 1960s, you weren't really there.
