Bionic eye transplant a first

BBC story here

From the article:

Surgeons in Manchester have performed the first bionic eye implant in a patient with the most common cause of sight loss in the developed world.

Ray Flynn, 80, has dry age-related macular degeneration which has led to the total loss of his central vision.

(For some reason, the six million dollar man never made me want one.)

I want me some digital eyes that I can adjust to see at all ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum! To watch x-rays, to see hot spots that signal infections or thrombosis, to pretend I'm the Predator, heh.

Chew, if only you could see what I've seen with your eyes!

I wouldn't get one.

From article:

Mr Flynn said: "It was wonderful to be able to see the bars on the screen with my eyes closed."

The implant cannot provide any highly detailed vision - but previous studies have shown it can help patients to detect distinct patterns such as door frames and shapes.

While the cane can detect obstructions on the ground, it doesn't do much to warn about things like low hanging branches. This implant will.

My mother was blind by my age from ARMD. As of today, I show no signs of developing it. If I did, I'd get one of these in a heartbeat.
