Astronomers Discover Giant Planetary Formation

Astronomers Discover Giant Planetary Formation
January 21 2014 16:39

ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) led a team of Japanese astronomers to obtain proof of a giant planetary system around a young star.

JAPAN – Through ALMA, the research team from Osaka University and Ibaraki University were able to observe a young star named HD 142527 in the constellation Lupus (the Wolf).

This discovery is having a large impact on the theories of planet formation and provides information to the possible origin of a vast amount of planetary systems.

The ALMA image shows cosmic dust circling around the star forming an asymmetric ring. Cosmic dust is a component material of planets.

The astronomers found that it is very possible that planets are now being formed in that region, which is far from the central star. This is the first evidence of planet formation found so far from the central star. It is about 5 times larger than the distance between the Sun and Neptune.

Atacama Large Millimeter Array is located in the most formidable desert on the planet. At nearly 17,000 feet altitude, working there takes some very serious physical conditioning.

Thankfully the control center is located at lower altitude. One of the most incredible technologies there is the ALMA correlator, a super computer at the high site.

It is not only one of the most powerful computers on the planet, but it resides at over 16,000 feet altitude which makes servicing it a dodgy affair.

This is big physics at its best, plunging deeply into what humans do not yet know, finding out new stuff, learning more about how our universe works.

It does not get better than this, at least until we try something even more daring.

Science rules!
