(Jewish Group) As Israel attacks Gaza, Jews elsewhere feel an impact

As the death toll in Gaza rises, so does anger against Israel — and sometimes, by extension, Jews — in Europe and elsewhere.

We should mark how unique this is. There’s a very large, and often very rich, Russian community in London — and there are no attacks on Russians or their mansions, restaurants or churches because of the Russian seizure of Crimea and sponsorship of uprisings in eastern Ukraine.

People from Sri Lanka didn’t live in fear when their government was pounding the Tamil Tigers into submission, with thousands of deaths. Chinese visitors are undisturbed by reaction to their government’s suppression of dissent in Tibet and its jailing of dissidents. And quite right, too. Who knows what Russians, Sri Lankans or Chinese abroad think about their governments’ actions?

Jews, by contrast, are held responsible by large numbers of non-Jews in Western democratic countries for Israeli actions. That’s all Jews, whatever their views on the Israeli response to the rockets fired on Israel from Gaza. Sometimes, the reaction goes much further than disapproval.

Over this past weekend, a synagogue in Paris was firebombed, and there were a couple of small demonstrations featuring signs saying “Death to Jews.” The attack further inflamed tensions that were already running high since before the latest violence in Gaza. In May, four people died when a gunman opened fire in a Jewish museum in Brussels. Many of those interviewed said they were not surprised, given the rise in the level of verbal and some physical violence against Belgian Jews in the past decade.

liberal or progressive are (along with muslims) in the forefront of these attacks. We have quite a few of them right here on DU.

We always see the same shit: all Jews should be ashamed; any attacks on us are "blowback" or "expected"; the reactionary "debates" that "anti-Semitism" is actually about "Semites", which doesn't include most Jews; any attacks at protests over Israeli actions (never the prior causes) are "false flags"; chants of killing all Jews are met with "meh" or "it is just a few instigators"; the Holocaust/Nazi comparisons, which normally inspire contempt when used against any group other than Jews, Israelis, or Americans, flow like water; conflating Jews and Israelis, normally pounced upon by the same "liberals and progressives" are ignored and flourish (including remarks about "chosen people", the Holocaust (as mentioned above), finding Jews who are "ashamed" of being Jewish, and using right-winger Jews, like Neturei Karta, as examples of "good" (even, liberal) Jews), and anti-Semitism is ignored, laughed at, mocked, and celebrated.

It is as predictable as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west.

I am not Jewish, but I was aware of those within the Democratic Party who were contemptuous of Jews. To see it displayed at this site so openly is a shame.

The most common excuse I see from them that they aren't condemning Jews, they're condemning the State of Israel. But they aren't fooling anyone. That's just a disguise, a tactful way (in their eyes) to get around what they obviously believe. They hate Jews.

Especially when comments like this:

Is disgusting that a peoples that went through what the Jews went through under Hitler, would turn around and start the same process against another peoples, especially since the Jews have been feeding off the collective guilt of the world for 60-70 years for what they went through under Hitler.

are considered acceptable because the rest of the text is wrapped in "criticism" of Israel. IT shows some aren't only criticizing Israel at all.

"IT shows some aren't *only* criticizing Israel at all."

I haven't read a single post on this site, regarding this latest development, that was supposedly "criticizing Israel" that wasn't 100% really saying "I hate Jews."

It's truly depressing. I was very active in Democrat politics my entire life, and hoped to be again.

To see anti-Semites rising to power like they are disgusts me, and makes me afraid for my children and grandchildren.

I mean, Malik Obama (the President's half-brother!) is a member of Hamas! (He may have been tricked into this for a photo shoot, but still, the optics are terrible.) President Obama has made no effort to condemn or distance himself from his brother. It's disgusting.

John Kerry flailing around in the ME is not helping.

Soon, there will be no where safe for us to go.
