NEW YORK - Forget the Mormon moment. The religious group that seems to be figuring most prominently in the presidential election right now is the Roman Catholic Church.
With Mitt Romney's recent choice of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as running mate, this campaign is the first in which Catholics are on both major party tickets. Vice President Joe Biden and Ryan are lifelong Catholics who attend Mass regularly and credit the church with shaping their views.
At the same time, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan plans a prime-time appearance next week by giving the benediction at the Republican National Convention after Romney becomes the first Mormon presidential nominee from a major political party.
Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is leading the fight against President Barack Obama's mandate for birth control coverage in health insurance.

That's right... a "celibate" man leading the fight against birth control coverage FOR WOMEN in health insurance. Someone NOT in a relationship. Someone that SUPPOSEDLY does not have to deal with unwanted pregnancy or other family planning issues, and they are "leading the fight" against birth control.
You keep going Catholic Bishops. You are well on you way to missing the relevancy train. Keep proving just how out of touch the Catholic church truly is.

It's all politics, in the end.

(14,337 posts)NYS has mandated private insurance cover birth control for years now. Just as with the national law, Catholic organizations are exempt. First, why is Dolan complaining. He says it doesn't go far enough. PRIVATE Catholic employers are not exempt. He doesn't like that. However, that won't appease him either. My son-in-law is a NYC teacher. His salary and benefits are paid for by NYC taxpayers, including Catholics. So my daughter's contraceptives are paid for by every single Catholic in NYC.
How can he stop this? BAN contraceptives? Birth control is just as "evil" as abortion and gay marriage. All mortal sins to Catholics. We are all going to live under Catholic teaching if they get their way.

(20,998 posts)Hmmm... what's the official policy on the abuse of children and predatory pedophile priests? Mortal sin or look the other way?
Again, the relevancy train is about to leave the station, and most of the patriarchal hierarchy of the church won't be on it.

(14,337 posts)The rapes are easier to coverup than that of little girls. Raping boys won't involve those sins of abortion either!
I used to wonder why it was so many boys and very few girls. Coverup. I know rape of either gender has nothing to with sex or sexual orientation of the rapist.
Anyway, ALL very sick minds.
