Coronavirus spreads after Covid-sceptic bishop's funeral in Montenegro

Patriarch Irinej, the 90-year-old head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, was admitted to hospital on Wednesday.

Mourners gathered at the event without masks and many kissed the bishop's body as it lay in an open coffin.

This was despite a major spike in coronavirus cases in both Serbia and Montenegro, and a warning from the authorities that the event posed a risk to public health.

Amfilohije, who died on Friday, described pilgrimages as "God's vaccine" and avoided wearing a mask.

As well as Patriarch Irinej, several other people who attended the funeral are believed to have contracted Covid-19. Amfilohije's successor, meanwhile, was said to be suffering with "mild pneumonia".

Montenegro's Prime Minister-designate Zdravko Krivokapic and Serbia's president also attended the event in Podgorica, Montenegro.

It's not only the USA that has a death cult involving heads of state and government who ignore official advice and put the cult members as well as themselves at risk.

2. Sad but comforting

To know it isn't Only The Americans who have ignorant among them. There have been a few outbreaks attributed to mass gatherings of the religious. IMHO a lot of them have been kept under wraps, too. Like Franklin Graham's huge March in Washington DC right after he and a couple others who were at the White House coronavirus party just before going to the March. Supposedly at least 50,000 people participated.

3. Covid-19: Serbian Orthodox Patriarch Irinej dies

Church figures in South-Eastern Europe have struggled to respond to the pandemic. Earlier this week, a funeral was held in Greece for a senior cleric who insisted on maintaining communion ceremonies, claiming there was no risk of infection.

The death of Metropolitan Bishop Ioannis of Lagadas, 62, came amid a spike in infection in Northern Greece.

The head of the Greek Orthodox Church has himself been admitted to hospital with mild coronavirus symptoms. Archbishop Ieronymos, 82, has publicly supported the Greek government's lockdown measures.

However, the Church's Holy Synod has rejected criticism of communion, which involves bread soaked in wine being handed out from the same chalice.
