Bible and rocks thrown through doors of Colorado mosque

(CNN) - Colorado police are investigating vandalism at a mosque after a person was seen on surveillance video throwing rocks and a Bible through the building's glass doors and prayer area on Sunday.

"The responding officer confirmed there was damage to the building and it had been vandalized around 4 a.m.MT (6 a.m.ET)," Fort Collins police spokesman Dustin Weir told CNN.

Officials with the Islamic Center of Fort Collins said the footage shows a man throwing several large rocks and the Bible into the mosque.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, urged authorities to investigate the incident as a possible hate crime.

Vandal threw 'biblical text' into a Colorado mosque: police

By Keith Coffman | DENVER

Investigators in Colorado searched on Monday for a man suspected of hurling a “biblical text” inside a mosque after smashing windows and a glass door of the Islamic center and overturning furniture inside, police said.

The Fort Collins Police Department said in a statement that the weekend incident was being investigated as a bias-motivated crime.

Police said the suspect, in his late teens or early 20s, carried out the vandalism at the Fort Collins Islamic Center around 4 a.m. on Sunday.

Authorities released a brief video clip captured from a surveillance camera outside the center that showed the man kicking an exterior door. Authorities appealed for the public’s assistance in solving the case.

About 1,000 Fort Collins community members gathered outside the Islamic Center of Fort Collins on Sunday evening to show solidarity after a vandal targeted the Muslim house of worship earlier in the day.

"No matter where you are from, we're glad you're our neighbor," was the overarching message on signs held by people of all faiths in the crowd. Attendees cheered as Sen. John Kefalas and President of the Islamic Center Tawfik AboEllail read the same in Spanish and Arabic.
