...the "founder" or person/entity (however defined) that being worshiped is dead...

As in door-nail dead... not "resting" dead... not shagged-out from a long squawk dead... would be pushing up the daisies if they weren't nailed to its post (see pet shop sketch) dead... not pining for the fjords dead...an ex-______... you get the gist...

I was going to add the age of the group seems to be key. Everything we know as a "religion" today was undoubtedly considered a cult when it started.

but it's clergy does resemble one. Leaves their family and life ( usually at an early age) to be sequestered and taught the teachings of the Church. Promising to have no family or life outside the Church, complete obedience to the Church leader. Lots of similarities.
