Support for Nontraditional Candidates Varies by Religion

http://www.gallup.com/poll/183791/support-nontraditional-candidates-varies-religion.aspx

by Lydia Saad

Story Highlights

Nonreligious more supportive of nontraditional candidates
Catholics tend to be more supportive than Protestants
Socialist, atheist candidates spark biggest religious support gaps

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Despite tidal shifts over the past 60 years in Americans' willingness to support a well-qualified black, female, Catholic or Jewish candidate for president to the point that these are now widely accepted, significant segments of Americans still don't endorse candidates who are gay or lesbian, evangelical Christian, Muslim, atheist or socialist. No more than three in four Americans say they would vote for candidates from any of these backgrounds. However, that support differs sharply by Americans' religious affiliation.

I wonder how accurate this is. As a Bernie Sanders supporter, it is a bit concerning.

I am a bit confused as to what the chart is saying, and how

the two equate.

I too am a Bernie supporter.

It doesn't concern me.

There are so many people who don't know the definition

of Democratic Socialists.

Bernie is doing a great job of explaining his positions, (which

are Democratic Socialists positions).

Once he gets more exposure I think many people will agree

with Bernie.

Thanks again.

this is a cause for celebration. After 90 years of non-stop red scare brainwashing the fact that overall 47% of the population would vote for a socialist is a sign that there is hope after all.

But I am an atheist socialist, so it is still problematic for my wanting Sanders as the next POTUS.

His base is strong here at DU, but I'm not sure how far it will carry him outside of here.

My first presidential election was '72, when McGovern lost his butt and we got Watergate and Nixon that year. However, I am pretty darn sure that Sanders will run a much better campaign than McGovern.

We will see. Regardless, I will vote for whichever Democrat is on the ticket.
