Pat Robertson, the notorious and influential television evangelist and founder of the Christian Coalition of America, is not new to the yogaphobic maelstrom that has been brewing for as long as Western Europeans and North Americans have been familiar with yoga. In the last couple of decades, largely in response to the widespread popularization of yoga, yogaphobia has shot to mainstream attention as socially conservative, high-profile Protestant evangelicals and Catholics have voiced unnerving warnings to Christians about how yoga threatens their religious commitments and could even lead to Satanism.
Robertsons yogaphobia has gone hand-in-hand with his Hinduphobia. In his apocalyptic novel, The End of the Age (1995), Robertson wrote about a devotee of the Hindu god Shiva who joins forces with the Antichrist to murder the President of the United States. And, in a 2007 episode of his popular program, The 700 Club, Robertson homed in on yoga, describing some aspects as really spooky.
Robertson has taken his yogaphobia to a whole new level in a recent 700 Club episode in response to the following question from one of the shows viewers:
Robertson replied that, although stretching exercises are terrific, yoga amounts to a Hindu trap:

(146,218 posts)do think mocking him while he is still alive would be too much.
It was a lame attempt at a joke.
guillaumeb
(42,649 posts)he mocks himself with his ridiculous statements far better than anyone else could. A pathetic figure obviously desperate for attention and willing to pander to the hate of ignorant and fearful people.

Religion does make some people ignorant.

(34,486 posts)I said ignorant. The choose to not acceptwhat's real.
Cause of their faith. Religion blinds them.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)and some are most certainly not.
People are blinded by many things and everyone accept's what is not real to one degree or another.

(34,486 posts)I explicitly and obviously was talking about some Robertson followers.
Your insistence to give religion a pass and remove any blame for it isn't worth refuting.
So, I don't need to say any more here.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)Clearly Robertson and some of his followers are ignorant.
I don't remove all blame and I frequently take religion to task. This OP alone is clear evidence of that.
I defend against broad statements which cast the religious in a negative light without making a differentiation.
I agree that you have said enough.

(33,982 posts)Besides, Kali is just an aspect of Parvati. Some say 'fierce', some say 'motherly'.
After all, threaten a she-bear's cub, and you'll find fierce and motherly may not be different issues.
Act_of_Reparation
(9,116 posts)With it being one of the oldest surviving religions, and with it utterly lacking a central dogma or authoritative text, it can be really tricky to speak about it save in very broad generalities.
Along those lines, I think one's interpretation of Kali is pretty geographical. Bengalis took a particular fondness for the consort of Siva in the 18th century and even today there is a strong tradition of Kali-worship in the region. Elsewhere, it would appear Durga--being slightly less unhinged--is the preferred aspect of Parvati.
In any event, I think the traditional view of Kali is that she is the embodiment of time and death--unstoppable, merciless power. She's often depicted standing upon the prostrate body of Siva, just to drive the point home: she can't, and won't, be controlled.
okasha
(11,573 posts)who is the embodiment of Time. Kali represents the darkness both before the beginning of Time and after its end.

(12,136 posts)or "700 Club CRAP" for short
Just like CDD (Christian Domestic Discipline) being the Christian version of BSDM.
because it's Pat Robertson. He could even wear yoga pants if he wanted to and his backup women could have big hair and tons of makeup on their CRAP videos. I think there's a marketing opportunity there.
