You are all stardust. You couldn't be here if stars hadn't exploded, because the elements (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, all the things that matter for evolution) weren't created at the beginning of time. They were created in stars. So forget Jesus. Stars died so you can live."
Angry Christians who believe that God created the earth sent hateful tweets back, to which she responded, ""How can people take the love out of science and bring hate into religion so easily?" "It makes me sad to think the world is this way. Like Einstein says, 'Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.'"

(12,041 posts)Miley Cyrus is not the same person she was when she played Hannah Montana, watch the video I posted below and you will see she is starting to take on serious issues now. I am not a fan of hers by any means, but she does seem to be a person who wants to evolve into someone who uses her voice to spread truth and I respect that.

(19,705 posts)Common sense and rational, factual statements like yours will not be received well at all.
Also, you may be called "militant", and then diverted to some nonsense about "militant atheists" in the Soviet Union, and other bizarre non-sequiturs. If you choose to engage, strap in and hang on, its a wild ride.

(5,881 posts)Science can explain many things concerning the physical existence. But it does not have the capability to determine the existence of a deity.
cleanhippie
(19,705 posts)Although science IS capable of providing what the most-likely answer is. Religion? All supposition and no substance.
But what does any of that have to do with the OP?

(5,881 posts)"reason, facts, logic, and evidence" and yours is that mine is much broader and encompassing. It is not so narrow as to be restricted to the confines of Logical Empiricism.

(5,881 posts)strictly and generally about religion vs. atheism, the analogy holds.

(13,029 posts)Narrow-minded characterization of science and dieties on? Any alleged "god" that has an objective physical existence (if there even is such a one) and that can influence, and be influenced by, events in the physical world, is amenable to having their existence examined and verified by rational, scientific inquiry. Apologists here and elsewhere keep trying to define their god to avoid that, but they, like you, make the narrow and limiting assumption that no "diety" anywhere in the universe could ever be discovered or demonstrated this way.
Try again.

(10,893 posts)I think this debate is pointless, as none of us were alive billions of years ago to know for sure how the universe came into existence. For all we know, either side could be correct.
cleanhippie
(19,705 posts)One side of the argument has endless lines of converging evidence, the other has a book cobbled together by desert dwellers that had no idea about the universe.
Either side could be correct? Hardly.
But you are right, I too wish the argument between religion and science would stop. And it will, as soon as religion stops trying to interfere with scientific progress.
tama
(9,137 posts)both sides are wrong. Both biblical literalism and naive scientism/materialism.
Myth and poetry speak of matters that logical propositions cannot express and even most valid scientific propositions are 'conventional' truths that keep changing as the process goes on.

(22,340 posts)You do realize the vast amount of evidence that the science side has garnered, right? It's pretty heavily weighted on that side. I mean, sure, the religion side has the bible and the theology that come from it, but...really, you think it's a 50/50 wash?
