Catholic parents lose battle to keep children out of multi-faith course at Quebec schools
By Thandi Fletcher And Natalie Stechyson, Postmedia News February 18, 2012
Catholic parents in Quebec cannot keep their kids out of a school course that teaches them about other religions, the country's top court has decided.
The Supreme Court of Canada Friday ruled in a controversial case that was cast by some as a matter of religious freedom versus a bid by the province to increase tolerance.
Allowing children to opt out of the course would be "a rejection of the multicultural reality of Canadian society and ignores the Quebec government's obligations with regard to public education," the court ruled.
The case pit a set of Catholic parents against the school board and the province of Quebec. Quebec's Ethics and Religious Culture program became mandatory for schools in May 2008.

Lucky kids! If only this was the USA.
Wow, these Catholic parents have more faith in the Pope than they do in their children.

(8,763 posts)don't always object to their children learning about different religions. Darkspouse went to a Lutheran school as a child, and they had a Religious Studies class wherein the curriculum was entirely a set of variations on a theme: "(Name of group here) believes (craziest tenet of religion here), and they're wrong because (our faith is better reason #XYZ)."
