Did Chicago Bears turn a blind eye to Hurd's drug dealing?

The bigger the scandal, the harder people start trying to clear themselves and cover their backsides. So Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd appeared in shackles in court Friday on major drug charges, accused of being part of a drug ring and reportedly dealing to other players.

And the Bears? They cut Hurd on Friday, and then general manager Jerry Angelo spent the bulk of a news conference explaining how it wasn’t the Bears’ fault, how they couldn’t have known. By the time he was done, you’d have thought the Bears barely even knew who Hurd was, much less how he ended up on the roster.

“We do our homework on players,’’ Angelo said Friday afternoon. “We have a very sound and tested (methodology) ... For me to sit here and say we should have known something that we didn’t know, no, I can’t say that is the case. There’s no foundation for anybody to say that. There are no facts. There’s no flags that anybody could present tangibly to say that we should’ve known otherwise.’’

Oh, shut up. No one had even asked him about the Bears.

But now that he brings it up ..

But you certainly don't have to use the drugs to deal them. And is it fair to expect a background check to find out what it took Federal law enforcement nearly six months?

I do, however, agree with this:

WSCR radio in Chicago quoted an unnamed police source as saying the feds have a list of players who were Hurd’s clients. The list reportedly is in double-digits. If that’s true, then it is a major problem for the Bears, for the NFL, for sport in general...

As titillating as the list sounds, what can be done with it, really? I mean, since you have to be caught in the act of buying, selling, or possessing illegal drugs for the bust to be legit?

I listen to a lot of Chicago sport radio, and the more i hear the more i doubt it. Not just me either. Lots of folks are doubting the existence of a list. Maybe a few names, but hardly a bombshell.

I do agree with the OP on the way the Bears brass handled the press conference.

They were brutal.

We all know there are bad seeds in all walks of life...goodriddance to bad rubbish. Now if the bears can keep our QB healthy enough to complete a season we may have been in the big dance ourselves...well there is next season to look forward to.I do think th organization should focus on some "big" receivers with "good" hands for cutler to throw to...not these butter soaked handed receivers we currently have on the payroll. Also the defense may...just may be getting a little long in the tooth...well at any rate we have a very decent squad..."GO BEARS"!!!!!!
