49ers sign Josh Johnson to 2 year deal...

The San Francisco 49ers today announced that they have signed QB Josh Johnson to a two-year deal through the 2013 season.

"Josh is a promising young player that has experience in our offensive system," said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. "He is a skilled athlete with good arm talent. Josh has shown promise in limited action, both as a back-up and starter at the NFL level. We are pleased to add him to our team."

Johnson (6-3, 205) was originally drafted in the fifth round (160th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Johnson has appeared in 26 games (5 starts) completing 96 of 177 attempts for 1,042 yards and 5 touchdowns. He has recorded 37 rushes for 237 yards (6.9 average). In his five career starts, Johnson completed 75 of 142 attempts for 828 yards and 5 touchdowns.

A 25-year-old native of Oakland, CA, Johnson starred collegiately at the University of San Diego under then head coach Jim Harbaugh. Johnson owns four USD career passing records including touchdown passes (113), completions (724), attempts (1,065) and passing yards (9,699). Additionally, Johnson rushed for 1,864 and 19 touchdowns, finishing his career with 11,563 yards of total offense.

Good. Harbaugh is familiar with Johnson and this means some real competition for Alex.

49ers also resigned Ted Ginn Jr....and now boast a receiving corps of Moss, Crabtree, Manningham, Davis, and Ginn. Not bad.

to replace Snyder yet?

Harbaugh thinks very highly of Johnson:

In Johnson's junior season at the Division I-AA school, Harbaugh declared that he was the best quarterback in college football, even better than Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, the eventual Heisman Trophy winner.

"I've watched Troy Smith play," Harbaugh said. "Our guy's better."

I don't know much about him, a few (or possibly quite a few) Cardinals' fans are upset about the amount of money spent on him but they really need help on the O-line.

Holds his own but doesn't blow guys off the line (one of the reasons I think the 49ers have so much trouble scoring in the red zone).

I hate to lose the consistentcy, but then I'd love to see the 49ers get another Larry Allen type (if at all possible). Some of Gore's greatest years were running behind Allen.
