St. George to host full-distance Ironman championships after COVID-19 forces move from Hawaii

ST. GEORGE, UTAH -- St. George and the Ironman group have a strong relationship, so much so that the city is slated to host the full-distance Ironman World Championship in 2022 after the event was moved away from Hawaii.

The change will mark the first time in 40 years that the full-distance Ironman World Championship will happen somewhere other than Kona, Hawaii. The event was moved to St. George due to the uncertainty over Hawaii’s ability to host such a large, international event in February, according to a news release sent out by the Ironman group.

The event will take place on May 7, 2022, although it’s technically the 2021 full-distance Ironman World Championship. This usually takes place in October but last month, race organizers postponed it to February 2022 due to Hawaii’s coronavirus situation.

But race organizers continued to worry about Hawaii’s ability to host the race and decided to change the venue to St. George, which has hosted multiple Ironman events in the past decade. The full-distance Ironman World Championship should return to Hawaii in October 2022.
