A three-year deal for Alex Smith is in the works.

Recent actions suggest the 49ers are willing to wait out the free agency signing frenzy in search of bargain players -- those formerly injured and /or who haven't "played up to their potential." I think Jim Harbaugh believes he can coach anyone to play well.

it's a no lose situation. The contract is cheap, nothing is guaranteed, and if he causes a problem in the locker room like a few have suggested, Harbaugh can just cut him..

Guaranteed they checked him out mentally as well as physically.

It's up to Randy from here out.

I was a huge fan of Moss when he was with the Vikings. Stuck up for him many times against a lot of arguments. But when he walked to the locker room before the Redskins game was over and it was close, I was done with him. If he had the work ethic of Cris Carter, he would have been unstoppable. Instead, it was all about Randy. He has proven that on every team he has been on. Good luck with him, 49ers. He'll be great for a couple games. Then he'll turn into the cancer he is.

I'm not sure how much production you'll get from him, I'm sure he can still play well in the right offense, and if he's motivated, but I think you'll be disappointed if you're expecting "leadership".

How about peer pressure to kick Michael Crabtree in the butt so he runs better routes? I'll take that.

he will only run the routes well when he is going to get the ball. Otherwise it is mouthguard out and run half-assed.
