No foam tomahawks on seats at Braves ballpark after comments by Cards' Helsley; other changes

ATLANTA — When fans arrived at SunTrust Park for Game 5 of the National League Division Series, one of the most important playoff games for the Atlanta Braves in more than a decade, there was something missing from their seats Wednesday, something subtle. The foam tomahawks that had been placed at each seat before games 1 and 2 of this series against the Cardinals were not there this time.

Rookie Ryan Helsley's comments after Game 1 about how he found the Braves' 'Tomahawk Chop' chant "a disappointment" and "disrespectful" to his Cherokee heritage prompted the Braves to consider how they promote the cheer and how they could alter their game-day practices as a result of Helsley's thoughts.

Two officials at the ballpark confirmed that the foam tomahawks were not at the seats in response to Helsley's comments and the conversations the team had as a result of them. There will be other changes during the in-game entertainment and fan interaction involving the "chop" that will be different from games 1 and 2.

"We're sensitive to it," a Braves spokesperson said.

2. Delayed conscience is better than none, but how long will it last?

Seems to me it should be hard to return to your old ways.

3. Braves Announce Plan To Only Use The Tomahawk Chop When A Native American Isn't Pitching

https://deadspin.com/braves-announce-plan-to-only-use-the-tomahawk-chop-when-1838920963

Hours before today’s winner-take-all NLDS Game 5, the Atlanta Braves responded to Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley’s comments about the disrespectful nature of the team’s longstanding “tomahawk chop” celebration. In a somewhat surprising turn, the team said they would not pass out foam tomahawks to fans, and they confirmed it was a direct response to Helsley’s comments last week about his Cherokee heritage and the “disrespect” conveyed by the gesture. That’s a good first step, but when the Braves tried to take the next one, they tripped over their own dicks.

The respectful and correct way to handle this would have been to ban the tomahawks and cease using the music and graphics package that accompanies the chop for the rest of the playoffs. However, that’s not that what the Braves are doing. They’re admitting the chop is offensive, yet are only taking initial steps to “reduce” it.

As their full statement on the matter reads, they will only stop encouraging fans to do the chop when Helsley, a relief pitcher, is in the game. Not only does this single out Helsley as a target for fans who are angry about the small concessions that are being made, it also implies that they’ll continue to use the music and graphics for the other eight or so innings that Helsley won’t be on the mound, as if the only possible offense of the chop is aiming it at someone while they themselves are in the game.

5. That is really lame

Trying not to "offend" their fans so do it while Helsley is sitting in the bullpen where he can hear and see it. Nothing but a weak PR move.

BTW, Helsley isn't just of Cherokee heritage but aiso one-half and actually speaks the language. This started when he was asked a question about it and he answered honestly.

4. looks like the fans did it anyhow

ATLANTA — The contrast was striking Thursday as Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley, pride of Tahlequah, Okla., and member of the Cherokee Nation, took the mound at a pivotal moment in the eighth inning and a stadium full of Braves fans swung foam tomahawks distributed by the team and chanted as they have for nearly three decades in Atlanta. The cheer, called the "Tomahawk Chop," was not directed toward Helsley, per se.Still, he felt something personal.
