Browns want to interview Condoleezza Rice for head-coaching job

Adam Schefter
ESPN Senior Writer

Browns general manager John Dorsey said last week that he was open to hiring a woman as Cleveland's next head coach, and there is one prominent name on the team's wish list to interview.

The Browns would like to interview former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for their head-coaching job, a league source tells ESPN.

If the Browns follow through on it, Rice would become the first woman ever to interview for an NFL head-coaching job.

Cleveland's interest in interviewing Rice comes at a time when women recently have moved into decision-making roles in men's professional sports. The Spurs hired Becky Hammon as an assistant coach, the Buffalo Bills hired Kathryn Smith as a quality control assistant, the Raiders hired Kelsey Martinez to their strength staff, and the 49ers hired Katie Sowers as an offensive assistant.

A potential interview hardly means the Browns will hire Rice, but they are interested in talking to her about the job and seeing what she could bring to the position and the organization.

"She's an amazing person," one Browns source told ESPN.

Her incredible intellect, if spread out like water on a table, wouldn't saturate a kleenex.

publicity stunt written all over it. What would be the next step? The Browns go 0-8 under Rice's tutelage and then Dorsey has Trumpy stop by to tell Condi on camera: "YOU'RE FIRED!"

Ratings bonanza even though it's a shit show. The NFL should shut this silly talk down.

Sounds like a a stupid idea. Aren't there women out there who have previous coaching football experience?

Jennifer Welter and Callie Brownson come to mind, I'm sure there are others. Rice cakes has no coaching experience and I doubt her football knowledge since she's never played or coached.

Condoleezza Rice on May 16, 2002, from https://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/2004-03-30-questions-usat_x.htm :

"I don't think that anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon, that they would try to use an airplane as a missile."

In Tom Clancy's 1994 Novel, Debt of Honor, a commercial airline pilot goes rogue, and he crashes the Boeing 747 he is commandeering into the U. S. Capitol during a joint session of Congress.

I recall Al Franken, in his Air America Radio talk show, pointing out the absurdity of Rice's statement.
