(6,629 posts)Sid is the best player in the league & of his generation. He's far from done. The Caps will lose to Tampa anyway.

(17,302 posts)He overtook Mario Lemieux in April as the Penguins' all-time playoff points leader. Crosby, at that point, had 173 career playoff points but he took 152 games to do it. Mario needed only 107 games. And Lemieux's career production pales in comparison to that of Wayne Gretzky, the best offensive player of all time. So there are levels of this stuff.
I hope Conor McDavid proves to be on the same level as Crosby or, even better, Lemieux. To match Gretzky levels seems unrealistic, but one never knows...

(65,000 posts)I'm not a die hard NHL guy, and i'm barely even a casual viewer (well except when the Blackhawks are really good). I' m much more a "wait for Sportscenter highlights" type.
But, as i recall during the Gretzky glory days, a high percentage of the buildings had the big rinks, which was right up his and team's alley given their speed and quickness.
Is the "open rink" thing still as prevalent in the NHL or have teams gone toward the smaller ice surface thing like the Hawks and Redwings do?

(17,302 posts)A little smaller than the rest.
Another factor to consider is that Gretzky's mid to latter career got bogged down by clutch-and-grab style of play in the neutral zone trap/"dead puck" era. That several year period significantly lowered scoring overall.

(65,000 posts)I recall fans of Olympic hockey complaining that it slowed the game down. Of course, in those i didn't have a high def TV so i wasn't a hockey nut because it wasn't that good on TV.
Did go to a few Hawks' games and it was way more fun live, but i still was never into enough to want to spend the money very often.
I was little more into it when my nephew was playing club hockey in HS and college. But, when he hung 'em up, i kind of retreated back to my "i'll watch the highlights" mode.

(6,629 posts)Hodgkin's lymphoma, a bad back...Who knows what could have happened if he had stayed healthy!
I don't think he would have been as good as Gretzky, even if healthy, but that's mere speculation. No doubt that Lemieux was an incredibly talented player.
