PITTSBURGH -- Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was carted off the field in Pittsburgh's 6-3 win on Monday after being hit in the head by a pitch from Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles. The club announced after the game that Vogelsong was taken to a local hospital with a left eye injury, and the Bucs said that further updates are unlikely before Tuesday.
Vogelsong was batting with the bases loaded and one out in the second inning, with Pittsburgh holding a 1-0 lead. Lyles' third pitch, a 92-mph fastball, appeared to strike him in the face or bounce off his helmet before ricocheting into his cheek.
Vogelsong immediately fell in the batter's box, and head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk rushed out to tend to him. Vogelsong got up to one knee and then stood on his own, a towel covering the area around his left eye. He sat upright in the cart with Tomczyk as it slowly drove him off the field.
The veteran right-hander made a spot start Monday afternoon after Sunday's Rockies-Pirates game at PNC Park was rained out. He pitched two scoreless innings before the injury forced him out of the game.

(31,133 posts)PITTSBURGH -- A day after he was struck in the face by a 92-mph fastball, Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was placed on the 15-day disabled list with facial fractures.
The Pirates announced the roster move before Tuesday's series opener against the D-backs at PNC Park, and they called up right-hander A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Vogelsong's place on the active roster.
Vogelsong was carted off the field and sent to Allegheny General Hospital on Monday after Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles' 0-2 pitch appeared to bounce off his batting helmet and strike him in the left eye or cheek.
After Monday's game, head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said Vogelsong's injury was to "the eye itself," including the orbital bone surrounding the eye.
