Peyton Manning......finished?

INDIANAPOLIS -- Four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning has hit a plateau in his rehabilitation from neck surgery, and the slow rate at which the nerves in his arm are healing indicate he will not play again, Yahoo! Sports reported Monday, citing two sources.

Manning's future with the Indianapolis Colts has dominated headlines in recent weeks, with team owner Jim Irsay facing a decision on whether to pay $28 million to retain the star quarterback.

The 35-year-old began throwing in December after the fused vertebrae in his neck healed as expected, but he has not shown any improvement in the velocity of his passes.

The two sources feared Manning would never show improvement again. ................(more)

1. I was never a fan but that's a sucky way to end a career...

And this news will dominate the NFL news on ESPN for days and they will over-report it more than they'll over-report on the Super Bowl.

3. So the other cleat has finally dropped (not that I'm surprised).

...(T)wo league-affiliated doctors told the website that it could take a year before Manning knows if he will be able to return and said they would recommend Irsay let go of him.

Indy can't afford to sit around for another season hoping he'll recover -- not in any sense of the word.

A cruel twist of a fate to a player who's been a credit to the league, like that baseball player who lost his eyesight. But maybe he can stay on with the organization as a special coach for Andrew Luck.

He'd be crazy to risk further injury.

5. Sources: QB Peyton Manning cleared

Last edited Fri Feb 3, 2012, 11:06 AM - Edit history (2)

Peyton Manning has been medically cleared by two doctors, including Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed the most recent surgery on the Indianapolis Colts quarterback's neck, to resume his NFL career, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The sources said Watkins examined Manning recently in Los Angeles and concluded the stability in his neck would have allowed the quarterback to play this Sunday if the nerves in his arm had regenerated to a satisfactory performance level...

What remains in question is the timeline
in which Manning's nerve regeneration to his triceps will improve to the point where he is throwing passes in the manner that helped him win four MVP awards during his 13-year career. (link)

So while his neck has reached a medically acceptable "performance level," that's only a battle won, not the war. The real questions are whether he can get his arm "regenerated" in time to start next season, and whether it can last through next season. So all in all, while Peyton has recovered some degree of job security, not that much has changed.
