Steve Spurrier is retiring as head coach at South Carolina, according to multiple reports news that comes just two days after No. 6 LSU beat the Gamecocks 45-24 on Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
Sports Illustrated was the first to report on Spurriers decision. Football Scoop, Rivals.com and The State newspaper have confirmed that Spurrier told his team Monday night of his plans to retire immediately. An interim coach will be appointed on Tuesday.
Whats this mean? The 70-year-old Spurriers last game as a college football coach came at Tiger Stadium against LSU.
The Tigers rolled up 624 yards of offense on South Carolina in a game relocated from Columbia, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge because of the flooding in the Palmetto State. Spurriers team slipped to 0-4 in the Southeastern Conference and 2-4 overall. Miles and Spurrier exchanged a prolonged handshake after the game.

(17,086 posts)What a strange fact to emphasize in the story. I just hope he and his family are in good health. Really odd for him to retire without notice in midseason.

(14,689 posts)I loved Spurrier during his years at Florida. He brought so much excitement with his innovative offense.
Looks like he just got burned out at South Carolina. He did have a good second act, recovering well from his disastrous tenure coaching the Washington Racial Slurs.
