Don’t fall for Tebow

Don’t fall for Tebow
Sure, he's winning now. But the new cult hero is still a mediocre quarterback -- and a thoroughly obnoxious person

Salon.com

For a guy who has only started 11 games as a pro, Tim Tebow has already touched off more sour, unwinnable arguments to last a career. Is the Denver Broncos quarterback a pro-life religious zealot who needs to keep his fervor off the football field and out of the locker room? Is he destroying smashmouth football with his cutesy option play? It’s a debate that consumes both sports radio and even the “Today” show — and with Gingrich-esque momentum, the argument is going Tebow’s way.

On Fox News, Tebow’s 7-1 record this year is just the latest reason to attack a liberal straw man. “Tim Tebow’s success as the quarterback of the Denver Broncos has done little to silence his critics, who believe that his faith in Jesus Christ has no business on the football field,” writes Todd Starnes. “It doesn’t matter how many touchdown passes he throws or how many games he wins because Tebow will always be a lightning rod for anti-Christian bigots.”

Well, always is a long time, and apologists like Starnes do Tebow no good when they imply that all his critics are anti-Christian bigots. Indeed, on Salon last week, Andrew Leonard made the liberal case for loving Tebow. “Maybe this country be better off if everyone, left or right, evangelical or atheist, pocket passer or option quarterback, occasionally found room in their hearts to cheer for those who are different,” he wrote.

But why do we need to change our opinions about Tebow at all, either as a person or a football player?

He is bad. Like last game against the bears the ONLY DAMN THING HE DID was score a touchdown in the last 2 minutes. He couldn't even get his kicker in reasonable kicking distance the whole game.

I am tired of the hype about him. It's so obvious he is the weak link on the broncos, yet everyone wants to act like he is the reason they win.

Then there is always his stupid face.

UGH.

religion; it's more about the contradiction: You point to the sky every time a touchdown is scored as if God is picking sides in what is undeniably a very violent sports game.

Does God choose sides?
Does He even care about such worldly things?

And so, every time I see any sports figure pointing to the sky after a home run or touchdown or field goal, or whatever, I have to wonder: God choosing sides?

And that's what bothers me about Teebow. It's not just him persay, but he does wear it so much on his sleeve, that in my view, he is the poster child for religious heresy.

several times since reading it... I guess God is blessing Aaron Rodgers 3 times more than Tebow, since he has 13 wins in a row.
My friends laugh, even the Bible bangers.

(Otherwise) we might have only had about 10 seconds left on the game when we got the ball.”

But did Tebow make a peep to the press, never mind to the Lord, about his fellow Broncos who caused the Chicago fumble, or thank the one who kicked the TWO fifty-yard-plus field goals? Why is everybody acting as though he's playing every position on the team? If Micheal Vick or Aaron Rodgers were acting like Tebow, everyone would be screaming bloody murder at such blatant selfishness and lack of team play!

For myself, I prefer not to discount his athletic success primarily on the basis of his religion and/or politics..

True, for the most he's been less than mediocre during the first 3 quarters, but on Sunday, during the 4th and OT, he went 18-24 for 191 yards and a touchdown. And for the season, he has a 4th completion percentage of 60.9% with 6 TDs 1 int...

And we can add this too:

Tebow now has six game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime in 11 career starts. Elias notes that among players to debut since 1970, no one has more game-winning drives in his first 11 starts than that.

Tebow will come back down to earth, but I for one like his attitude and no one can question his competitive spirit.

He was one of the greatest college players of all time and if he doesn't pan out as a pro he was still great in college. I like many thought of his "religion" as overdone but watching him he is just being himself. If he does learn how to throw watch out. He is huge and the same size and just as fast if not faster that the linebackers. Sarah never did anything but Tebow did do things.

This is the NFL and if you cant throw by now...you aint gonna learn.

49 percent completion level is awful.

Tebow scored 6 points last Sunday. 6 points.

His type of play is unsustainable and the wheels will soon come off.

Billy Kilmer and Joe kapp. yeah, i know it was a long time ago. he doesn't have to be the greatest thrower but if he is accurate for 30 yards he can make it.

Dec 2011

When they played, passing was much more difficult because the defense was allowed to do everything short of skull-fucking the receivers on a pass play. Plus, the "west-coast offense" was nothing more than the offensive playbook Paul Brown was using in Cleveland (Bill Walsh learned it from Brown, by the way, it should be called the "Ohio offense&quot . You can't compare passing stats from back then to now very well without accounting for a lot of things.

The article did not explain that to me. He is very humble. Humble with a mission. So what? A mission I would not take on. Even though he is young, I admire his spirit. I thought this country was supposed to be free for expresson.

Christ, do any fucking football writers even have a clue as to the history of the game? The option offense was pretty much it until they allowed the forward pass, and it was still pretty much the game until the 1940s. Quarterbacks running the ball in an era of 330-pound lineman and linebackers who can rip arms off is hardly "cutesy." In fact, that's kind of the definition of "smashmouth."
