Pablo Sandoval left his heart, batting average and dietitian in San Francisco

Pablo Sandoval’s slump wearing on Boston fans (Bruce Jenkins, San Francisco Chronicle)

At these prices — an average of $19 million a year through 2019 — that doesn’t cut it around Fenway Park. They’re looking for a third baseman who might no longer exist.

After going 0-for-4 Thursday against Minnesota, Sandoval is hitting .239 with a .306 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .352. He didn’t make a single error from April 25 through Saturday, but when that streak was broken Sunday against Texas, he made a second error in that game. He made two more errors Thursday. Boston fans are grumbling about a lot of things these days, and Sandoval is hardly immune.

This was a recent evaluation from Gordon Edes of espnboston.com: “Sandoval batted just .200 with four extra-base hits in May, the second-worst month of his career in which he has played at least a dozen games. The only month worse was April of last season, when he batted .177 and was supposedly distracted by contract extension talks with the Giants. “He is a major disappointment to date."

It’s not as if Sandoval gains instant fan support in the manner of supremely athletic teammate Mookie Betts, or the hustling Dustin Pedroia. Sandoval appears to be as heavy as he’s ever been in the major leagues, an issue likely to become intensified if the slump continues.
