I just read that Tim Thomas skipped the Bruins meeting with POTUS at White House

Because of his "political beliefs."

He's another Schilling. Ewwww...

1. What is wrong with these guys??

Heck I hated Reagan as a kid, but I still wanted to see the White House and found it a thrill that my class was invited to go there. These guys just have no class or respect for the office of the White House

2. Sadly, you heard correctly...here's a nauseting read...

and the worst excerpt.

While his politics aren't common knowledge among many hockey fans, Thomas hasn't hidden his political leanings. He's a fan of former Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck, once saying he aspired to appear on Beck's talk show as a guest.

Big Government, a website founded by conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, celebrated Thomas as a "true Tea Party patriot" for having "In God We Trust" and the Gadsden flag on his mask. From Big Government:

In addition to displaying his support for the Tea Party on the ice, Thomas is a FreedomWorks donor, giving generously right before the historic November 2010 elections, according to the FEC.

Chiarelli said he hoped Thomas's decision not to attend the White House event wouldn't overshadow the Bruins' day.

The d-bag who wrote the article thinks Thomas is reat for doing this...asshole.

4. I am quite surprised.

He's such a class act in every other respect, but now he has to snub the President because they are of different political beliefs? He's free to his own opinions I suppose, and there aren't many DUers who would have gone to meet george bush if given the chance (I would have, not that it has anything to do with anything). But still, that's classless. What a jerk.

6. Did any athletes refuse to meet W under similar circumstances?

I honestly don't remember... but there was sure plenty to protest over those 8 years.

7. Pedro Martinez...said he said he had "scheduling problems"

But pretty much everyone knew the real reason.

9. Even Joey Porter showed up at the White House

Former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter created a stir before that White House visit (2006) by saying he intended to tell Bush he didn't like how the country was being run. Porter chose not to make those comments, but he wore dark sunglasses throughout the ceremony.

14. Thanks

While looking for something else I found that the cesspool/satire site (I'm not sure which it really is) known as "Conservapedia" has a list of "Greatest Conservative Sports Stars." They preface the list by saying

Most sports stars are probably conservative. Athletes at all levels of competition frequently praise God for giving them the strength to succeed at their sports.

Yeah... since conservatives own God and religion...

8. Fuck him, his loss. His teammates obviously felt differently. . .

. . .and were thrilled to see the POTUS up close and personal.

15. I'd draw a distinction between favoring his decision and the poll question

The poll asked readers if they were upset about it. I don't approve of his decision but hasn't affected me emotionally - I'm definitely not upset.

Before he was a goalie, and now I'll root against him because he's a RW idiot. I'm sure I'm far from alone even among those who feel he had every right to do this.

12. I didn't know and it does suprise me somewhat.

He's always has come across as a pretty reasonable guy in the interviews I've seen. Of course, they were always about hockey, but I can't say I ever thought he might be a winger. Oh well, he's a great goalie....that doesn't make him a political scientist.

13. I think he's a Sovereignist.

His statement:

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers [ sic ] vision for the Federal government. Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL." http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins/extras/bruins_blog/2012/01/tim_thomas_decl.html
