They are the "New England Patriots" and play in Foxborough MA, which is a suburb of Boston.

Santa Clara is 40 miles south, roughly the distance between DC and Baltimore. The fact that they now suck green moss-covered rocks is purely a coincidence.

When the teams play better, they fill the stadiums (or can charge more for tickets, if they're already filling it) and sell more merchandise to make more money, so there's a greater financial incentive in this market than some others, which gives the owners a greater financial incentive to invest in management (good GM's and coaches), or to change personnel when it's not working. Look at teams like the Tampa Rays or Marlins or even Atlanta who had some great seasons and still couldn't fill their stadiums, or teams like the Bengals that seem to have inexplicably given Marvin Lewis a lifetime job. Boston (the whole market, not just the city) is also a multi-sport market, so teams have to compete for the fans money more than in cities where a single team (or maybe just two) dominate the market. Also, it's a good bit of luck.

Sucessful franchises sell more stuff. The Pats are encroaching on NYY territory, except today there are free agency rules....no Yankee could go the "free agency" route back when they had their dinesty. But
players want some of that great team majic. That is why Revis, Browner, and lots of players want in.with the Patriots. Please continue to believe they are cheaters...and then continue to watch their record grow as winners!

It took the Red Sox almost a hundred years to win a World Series....and from the look of last season it may take another 100.

Everything is cyclical.

Pats haven't won a title in 10 years, but have been to the big game twice in that span, only to be defeated by Eli EXPLETIVE DELETED Manning.

Bruins lost in the Stanley Cup finals in '13.

The Celtics are terrible.

The Red Sox finished in last place this year.

So.

NY sports teams sell ridiculously priced tickets. So, they have to chase stars in order to justify the ticket prices. Instead of building teams through the draft and developing talent, NY teams have to have stars to satisfy the Wall Street banker fan base.
