SI.com's Sports Media Awards: Best, worst from 2012

Person of the Year: Joe Buck?

Yep, we know. Plenty of you hate him. You think he's smug and sanctimonious and got his gig because of his famous last name. That rap is old. Buck is an exceptional baseball announcer and he's improved yearly in football. His skills were most visible on Oct. 14 when he called an NFL game (49ers-Giants at Candlestick Park) in the afternoon and an MLB playoff game (Cardinals-Giants at AT&T Park) at night, a television stunt that promoted Fox Sports but also highlighted the broadcaster's unique versatility. Most impressively, Buck's performance came less than a year after a virus he contracted in the laryngeal nerve of his left vocal cord nearly cost him his career.

Readers poll: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/POLLSERVER/results/63487.html

Best play-by-play: Al Michaels (NBC)
Best analyst: Charles Barkley (TNT)
Best announcing team: Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth (NBC)
Best studio show: College GameDay (ESPN)
Most unlikable sports personality: Skip Bayless (ESPN)
Best place to watch sports; ESPN

Much more at the links. I think the analysis of Troy Aikman deserves greater respect from the fans.

Joe Buck ... well, I'm sure he makes big money, but his World Series work pales in comparison to our local San Francisco radio/TV guys.

I find Michaels, Collinsworth, and Buck particularly annoying. I agree Aikman is surprisingly good once I look beyond his past affiliations..

In college, the announcer who yells all the time about everything, Gus Johnson, is the absolute worst. My favorite team there would be Lundquist and Danielson by a nose over Musburger and Herbstreit .

I agree local PBS programming can be wonderful—unlike any other local station/affiliate.
