Camacho seriously hurt in shooting, but expected to survive

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Former world boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho was shot in the face as he sat in a car outside the Puerto Rican capital Tuesday, and doctors said he was in serious condition but expected to survive.

Another man in the car, whose relationship to the 50-year-old Camacho wasn't immediately known, died in the attack in which at least one gunman opened fire on their vehicle in the city of Bayamon, according to a statement from police.

Camacho was rushed to Centro Medico, the trauma center in San Juan, where he was in critical but stable condition, Dr. Ernesto Torres, the hospital director, told reporters.

The bullet apparently struck him in the jaw but exited his head and lodged in his right shoulder and fractured two vertebrae, Torres said. The doctor said the boxer, who was trailed by drug and alcohol problems during a career that included some high-profile bouts, could be paralyzed from the shooting.

Former world boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho was in critical condition Wednesday after being shot in his native Puerto Rico, with doctors and his family expected to wrestle with whether to take him off life support after his condition worsened.

Doctors had said Camacho was expected to survive after he was shot in the face while sitting in a car Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon. But his condition worsened overnight and his heart stopped at one point, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.

"He's battling minute to minute. This is the most important fight of his life," Torres told The Associated Press outside the hospital in the Puerto Rican capital.

Torres said that two specialists will examine the boxer to determine his level of brain activity.

on the news last night.

I remember when he was in his prime, his brother was an inmate at NYS DFY Camp Brace. Hector was a gifted boxer, with speed and timing. He was also very intelligent inside the ring. Sadly, he wasn't the same outside the ring, and would end up serving time after getting caught attempting to steal some television sets. He was not, of course, the first boxing champion to earn a lot of money fighting, and to lose it quickly upon retirement.

Obviously, whatever the circumstances, this incident is tragic. I hope that he makes a full recovery.

His family decided he was not going to recover (Was ruled brain dead by doctors early on), so they removed him from life-support early Saturday, and he passed away shortly after.

He definitely had the potential to be a great boxer--his speed in the ring and hand eye coordination was awesome, and he was very flamboyant and had ring presence. However, he let too many around him that were not good people, and there was too much flamboyancy (wine, women, drugs, run ins with police, family squabbles/problems) which got the best of him.

He could never let all those "demons" go in his life .....

AT ANY RATE, May the Macho Man RIP, and my condolences to his family ......
