Stonestreet to announce name of Rachel Alexandra's foal Friday at Saratoga

Barbara Banke, owner of Stonestreet Farm, will announce the name of 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra’s first foal on Friday during a special ceremony at Saratoga Race Course.

Banke will announce the name of the bay colt, who is by two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, following the running of the Curlin Stakes, a 1 1/8 mile race for three-year-olds with a post time of approximately 6:22 p.m. EDT. The name was submitted to Stonestreet as part of a fan contest.

Stonestreet offered fans a chance to select the name of the bay colt on Valentine’s Day and more than 6,500 official entries were considered. The winning entry was drawn on July 23 by Banke with assistance from Rachel Alexandra. The winner receives the opportunity to visit Rachel Alexandra at Stonestreet Farm near Lexington, Ky.

“Even in retirement the love and affection shown to Curlin and Rachel Alexandra continues to amaze us,” Banke said. “We feel the name the fans selected carries on the legacy of these two amazing athletes.
