(29,322 posts)but aren't division rivals a different ball of wax? I'm not sure how it is in baseball (in regards to similarity - in general baseball seems more random but they play so many games the cream rises the top) but in other sports, the divisional opponents can be the toughest regardless of record. They know your tendencies & weaknesses better than other teams.
I remember a few years ago a poster here was asking something along the lines - how could Arizona possibly lose to San Francisco after defeating SF. Never mind that Arizona was at home vs Minnesota & on the road against SF (also SF nearly defeated Minnesota @ Minn) - it was the divisional factor that was the explanation to that question.
Truthfully, that example wasn't the first that came to mind. I was thinking of Miami because I was thinking there could be evidence of that even though they play in the weakest division in the NBA. However, my example quickly falls apart after Orlando(which makes sense as an in-state rival in addition to a divisional opponent). Here is what I was going to say on that.
Even though Orlando 10-21 against top 10 teams - 14-27 against top 16 (top 10 & 16 according to June 9th Sagarin Power Ratings which factors in playoff games. So while Philadelphia was either a 15 or 16 team according to standings, they are #7 due to their success in the post-season) they split w/ Miami.
Atlanta was worse against quality competition and Miami won 3/4.
They swept the Bobcats.
Interestingly they lost 2 out of 3 to the Wizards but there is 1 1/2 asterisks on that. The 1/2 - The Wizards defeated a Miami team w/o Wade but it was in Miami handing the Heat 1 of their 5 regular season home losses. The 1 - It was the last game of the regular season so Miami sat out James, Wade, & Bosh for the playoffs.
