I don't think they do a good enough job teaching African American History. Perhaps adding a semester every year to the subject would help in understanding the history.

I was thinking about the Civil War and Slavery but you are right that is part of history and not necessarily African American History. I do remember studying George Washington Carver in school and was mistaken about calling that African American History too.

Usually, it's a blurb in the one chapter about African Americans, or if they're trying to spread it out a bit, a blurb in the chapter for that specific time period. In my mind, it's a half nod to our contributions to this country.

It's also interesting that they choose the same people (Charles Drew, C.J. Walker, George Washington Carver and MLK), in all the history books prior to college, as if those are the only ones worth noting.

you make me laugh, with your raw statements. "Notable Negros"

You and I must have hung out sometime in the past, as we used to joke about Black History month, calling it: Negros of Note Month.

When I was coming up ... the first negro we were introduced to was "Mr. Anonymous Slave" and the next negro was Dr. Martin Luther King (the white-washed version) and that was about the end of it.

I swore that no child of mine would grow up thinking that that represented the totality of Black contribution to this nations rich history.

On the South side of Chicago in my Catholic High School Black History Month was exactly that, "Notable Negros-'All the black people you can stand for 4 straight weeks!'". When I got to College, I learned more black history in ENGLISH class with Haki Madhubuti, than I did in all 4 years of High School.

If you spent a few late nights at Izola's on 79th st in the late 80's it probably came up quite a bit!

Yep, that's exactly how it is! I just said the same thing to Morpheus!

Start out with slavery and then jump 100 years ('cause I guess black people were all just napping for all of that time and not doing anything) to talk about MLK and the CRM. And we wonder why there are so many ignorant clueless people in this country.

Except for of course the five lines that get tossed out about MLK and the Civil Rights Movement (chock full of Notable Negroes, you know) and yet, so many white people still have no clue who that man was or what he was about.

Teach history.

The teach a white supremacist capitalist patriarchal version of it.

If it were real history, there would be people of all shapes, sizes, colors, creeds, and sexes.

Not just a bunch of old white guys doing all the real thinking and inventing and saving people and hard work and stuff. Not hard work like manual labor hard work, tho. Sho nuff that ain't for the likes of them fine fellas. No, that mental hard work. You know that non-white and/or non-males are capable of.

Usually I get sarcasm ('specially as I'm frequently called a smart ass sarcastic sob . . .)

I do see red on his topic, tho, and im not quite coherent. I'm so infuriated by it all.

do you want to know what REALLY pisses me off? I didn't know any of it until I went back to college about 2000. I was on that 25 yr graduation plan. I was lucky enough to have two professors, back-to-back semesters who taught more about real American history than I had ever learned in high school, or my first tour of college.

Want to hear something that makes me even sicker? My son comes home to tell me about his "American history" class and how it doesn't make any sense. Of course it doesn't. It's all lies and I've been telling him the truth his whole life. (I don't think his teacher is too happy with him, or me, at this point. I think if she hears "Howard Zinn" one more time she's going to run from the room screaming.) The sad part is, this is a Spanish immersion American history class so it is supposed to be inclusive, and minority focused. Uh-huh.

History is written by the victors - Churchill
I actually did read that quote in my history book in HS and I took it to heart from then on. I take "history" with a huge block of salt as a grain is not enough.

As long as your son has you to back him up with the real deal, he can't go wrong!

Happy Black History Month, everyone, courtesy of last night's all-white College Jeopardy panel! In the second round of play, the contestants sailed through five of the categories—including "International Cinema Showcase," "Weather Verbs," and "Kiwi Fauna"—but avoided the sixth like the, ahem, black plague. That category was "African-American History."

In other words, these kids were more confident in their knowledge of weird animals in New Zealand than black human beings in America.

With video!!!

It was an eye opener even in the early seventies. I learned a lot in the Q & A's from black students taking the class.

I can only hope the college kids had an epiphany and realized their ignorance. It could lead to them working for a better world, instead of Dittohead Dystopia.
