http://www.cnbc.com/2016/02/15/scalias-replacement-likely-to-be-loretta-lynch-analyst.htmlIn other words - shit just got real!
Tom Goldstein, who runs the influential SCOTUSblog, had earlier predicted Ninth Circuit Judge Paul Watford would make the top of President Obama's shortlist. But in a revised blog post, Goldstein said he now believes Lynch is the leading contender.
Lynch is a "very serious possibility," Goldstein wrote. "The fact that Lynch was vetted so recently for attorney general also makes it practical for the president to nominate her in relatively short order."

(244 posts)All president Obama has to do is give old turtle face McConnell a call and inform him of his intent to use the 17 days between the end of his term and the opening of the new congress.Odds are in dems favor to win back senate , Once in place they nuke the filibuster of suprerme court justices . so the pres. would have 17 days to put any crazed, black, muslem, lesbian socialist , communist, he wants to in place.Nothing the repugs could do. even with a new rubug in the white house. If McConnell wants his way ,he is taking a HUGEEEEEE risk. Maybe he will change his mind once he sees he might not have control after the election.

(31,207 posts)same way as if it were a Latino nominee. Sad, but true. I just don't see OUR electorate applying the same kind of pressure that the Latino community would. When the Sotomayor nomination came, the Latino community was prepared to go to war with the GOP. That being said, I just heard a commentator on NPR observe that there are many more competitive Republican Senate seats this election cycle, and out of 8 of those seats, the president won those 6 states in '08 & '12.
I'm hoping the president nominates someone that the whole Democratic tent will get behind, and if that's Lynch, then I'm all in. I would love to see a black woman on the highest court in the land to counteract Clarence Thomas, but I don't know if it's strategically/politically calculated enough. If the next president is a Democrat, he/she may make 3 or 4 appointments, and I hope to Gawd almighty that at least one of them is black.

(26,549 posts)She's a very good nominee. And also has a current position where a long, drawn out confirmation battle won't be an enormous burden. She can keep doing her work as AG while the Senate fiddles, and practical issues (ie. need to be in DC a bunch for hearings) aren't a problem.
And her relatively recent confirmation makes that fiddling look bad.

(1,017 posts)We have no idea where she stands on important issues. She has not track record on free speech, church/state etc.... She could turn out to be bad or just mediocre on civil liberties.

(1,017 posts)Prove that she is.
Whats her philosophy about the Bill of Rights? We have no idea. She's just been a prosecutor and the AG. I doubt she has even thought much about it. If you have evidence Id like to see it, maybe ill change my mind. You dont though, you just like the politics of a black woman. Thats not a good reason for a supreme court nomination.

A bad assailed one. Get used to it.
And yep - this is the African American Group.
We celebrate accomplished black folks in here just as, we do in our homes.
Out there- it's target practice on us. She gets that. She will assure voting rights for black people. And the Right to abortion. And defend ACA. And marriage equality.

(86,048 posts)She just got there and is just getting started in cleaning up what Holder wouldn't touch. I like here where she is as I like Elizabeth Warren where she is. Amy Klobuchar (Sen.D-MN) said the same last night to Rachel Maddow, she likes the job she has in the Senate and wants to continue to work in that position since there is so much to do and she just got started.
I think there are other choices who would serve us well, we just need to do our homework and help the process along.

(6,960 posts)Lynch is a part of the Obama administration.
This would give the Repuglicans free rein to use any hearings (if they have any) to go far afield and question all kinds of things about the actions and policies of the Justice Department.
Why would Obama do that? Why would he give the Senate Repuglicans a green light to play politics?
The best choice will still be someone highly qualified who is at least somewhat removed from the administration.
