THURSDAY, JANUARY 28, 2016BY MIKE MULLEN
<...>
A handful of black activists are claiming they were racially profiled and denied a privilege they hadn't even asked for. The claims led to an ongoing fight on Twitter; the messy fallout is another example of the fragile alliance of liberals, radicals, and youths Sanders has to capture and preserve to overcome Hillary Clinton.
Initially the tale unfolded in a long train of tweets from a number of different people. Fortunately, someone in the affected group gave a more comprehensive version of the story to the This Week in Blackness podcast, which retold that side's story yesterday. A group of seven young black women had gone to the rally to hand out fliers to raise awareness about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and its effect on the local African immigrant population.
After they arrived, someone from the Sanders campaign approached the group, and asked if they'd want to stand on the platform behind the candidate during the speech. These spots are prime real estate for winding up on local or national TV coverage, and event planners are known to go out of their way to throw together a collage of people with varying ages, looks, and races.
<...>
Soon enough, a campaign organizer had a change of heart. Someone had tipped Sanders' people that this group was planning a disruption of some kind during the senator's speech.
<...>
The Sanders staffer approached the crowd waiting to get on stage, and identified a handful who were no longer welcome to those special spots. The moment was caught on cellphone video, later tweeted out by one of the people barred from the stage. According to the people involved, the campaign worker pointed out black attendees, only, including some who weren't even affiliated with the activist group

(16,286 posts)I would want them on that stage ESPECIALLY if they were going to protest.
I could then let them, show that I dont want to silence them, and then I would get $1 million worth of free publicity from all national news outlets
I want to believe someone on that staff understands this now.

(42,641 posts)The negative posts about HRC seem to consist of factual posts about actual positions and behavior.
Amazing how desperation can lead people to throw mud. Not very inspiring, not very progressive, just negativity.
By the way, this is the second, identical post with these allegations.

(30,439 posts)Did you read the article?
Are you saying they're part of some kind of conspiracy to help Hillary?
This story has nothing to do with Hillary.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)And allegations are called allegations because they are unproven.
A conspiracy? Only in the sense that the corporate media, seeing Sanders popularity growing, recognizes that he does constitute a threat to business as usual. Thus the media will search out such stories.
Thus all the stories about impossibility of really changing things. Better to vote for cautious incrementalism rather than substantive change. Real change makes the 1% unhappy.

(24,544 posts)unimportant. And will come into the AA forum to tell an AA poster (Cali_Dem) and others that we shouldn't find it important either.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)If Sanders had a history of ignoring minority issues, if he voted against issues that are important to minorities, this might be relevant. But he does not have such a history. He has never had such a history.
So a story like this, an unsubstantiated (so far) allegation, should be given little credence. If more information is presented, if information shows that this ejection represents official policy, my view would change.

(89,239 posts)Clinton. even in 2008 against Obama most did not hate her and would have supported her if she had won the nomination.
so if people feel the same about both candidates things like this can make a difference.

(89,239 posts)i think this is one reason his campaign finally had to tell his supporters to respect others.
i wonder if people like Natalie Jackson who endorsed Sanders and was attorney for trayvon martin's family said some things since she probably knew what happened to Sybrina FUlton when she endorsed Clinton.
it's clear there is a lack of control in this campaign and i don't think he was prepared for it . and i think people with not the best intentions may have been able to take advantage and get on it .

The fascist, who by the way is rolling in their adoration like a dog in a pile of manure, I can't believe that Sanders appreciates some supporters like are found here who claim to be progressive and liberal yet have shown their TRUE political, cultural and racial inclinations/leanings by statements that leave a POC out in the cold, politically and racially, again.
HRC is a centrist, just like many here, who's past voting record and perceived racist shenanigans by both she and Bill during her run against our current POTUS and during the other democratic administration leaves a lot to be desired by this POC
Sanders only has to let his staff filter it down through the ranks that racist, ignorant supporters better go back underground with their hate and hide the racist knives and get back to smiling in the faces of those they hate, as has been done for generations, and continuing to fake their enforcing liberal progressivness. IF he should win the nomination he would as HRC would get my vote. Even if O'Malley should slip in the same goes.
Yet it cannot be denied that a lot of dubious supporters of Bernie have caused a lot of problems to their candidate by offending good POC who possibly would have voted for BS and have poisoned the air for decent and civil debate irredeemably. And I see civility degrading much much more here, racially and politically, in the coming year.

I never said that it did. You started this pointless exchange by coming in here -- one of the apparently HUNDREDS of times you've posted in this group though I've never seen it -- to ask if he was really black in response to my post asking a non-black DUer why they are trying to instruct black posters in this forum on what is and is not important to black people.
So given what you have and have not taken issue with in this very thread, it doesn't surprise me in the least that you find Cali's posts to be "flamebait."
Now that I've informed you that Cali is indeed AA, if there's nothing else....?

(18,115 posts)This is an immensely valuable forum, one that I read often and have posted in and recced posts in. Certainly not hundreds of times, never claimed that.
The post came up in the latest feed. I generally distrust everything the OP posts because I don't believe they post in good faith. Their motives are suspect. I responded to your post simply to ask how one would know the race of anyone on DU. With a very few exceptions (now including Cali), I don't know the race, sex, gender expression, sexual orientation or nationally of any poster. I generally know only what they post of their politics.

I think this is an amazing humanitarian policy by the president. And this is the first I'm hearing about it too.
What the hell, David? i think it's the same reason clinton's conversation with the blm member did not get a negative reaction from most black people . it's because even if there might have been a difference she still came off as interested in wanting to do something about it .
but in this case with SAnders these people may not have even been protestors but supporters. what would have been the best way to deal with it is to let sanders know about them and what they were doing and sanders could mention them and point them out during his speech as an example of people who are getting involved and doing things and that's what everyone needs to do to get change .
dealing with hecklers is a regular part of this job and it will happen even once they become president. we see it with obama and he is always able to turn it into his favor.

(30,481 posts)I read a short post from #23 yesterday that was really to the point of some things we are seeing. POC at flat out used as a political football here. I truly feel it is a majority of posters doing so. I tried to find some things out about this event yesterday and was either ignored or outright dismissed. I would like to omit many O'Malley supporters from this thought I'm sharing. Overall, they really seem to want to discuss social justice in a very thoughtful manner. I say that as an unapologetic Clinton supporter.
I have to say, I find the conversation here only a bit better. Seems some people who never post in this group have found their way here to bring trouble and completely deflect from the issue. Thanks to those here who have hit on some solid points.
Points with respect to Sanders. This is not a direct reflection on him and his beliefs with race and race relations. The only way I attach anything negative to him is in management. They should have had something in place for an issue such as this. I mean it is simply something all candidates know is going to happen. The young man dealing with this was 1) in way over his head, and 2) completely lacked awareness to race relations. I believe I am being fair and kind in my assessment. I only know him from the video. I believe that is about all that can truly be known from the video alone.
The Sanders campaign cannot have a major dust up that would take over the last couple of days of media coverage before Iowa. The young man was out of his league but he understands this. I think it would be difficult to assess the true intent of the anger he showed. He panicked and showed his lack of sensitivity at best, instinctive racism at worst. People do really messed up things when they are charged with tasks to great for them to handle.
Overall, the issue to me has little to do with Sanders. It is an enormous issue and should be pointed out and discussed. When a cop pulls someone over for DWB, we are all outraged. Here it is becoming clear at least one person was removed for "sitting while black." It is an extension of similar oppressive thought patterns and we should recognize that.
I have zero problem with known protesters being removed from an event like this as politely as the protestors will allow. I also have enormous respect for protesters who use these events to elevate causes. It is a provably effective method. No one should be deflecting, dismissing, or flat out mocking a situation where it appears a person was removed for SWB.
Final note. Am I reading correctly that they were there to protest failed immigration policies? Hero's is what they are.
Edit: FC, after reading on of your posts I felt a moment of pride. Your daughter sounds amazing and seems to be someone fighting on the front lines. That is huge. If I felt proud just reading I can't imagine how proud you must be as a mother.

(18,124 posts)Wouldn't surprise me. I have learned a lot about BS supporters by reading their comments on DU and in attending local BS meeting. It was enough for me to understand what an outsider could expect from a lot of his base supporters
