Bernie Sanders’s biggest problem is his fan base (Angry white males)

Written by
Jake Flanagin

The first Democratic debate, which aired on Oct. 13, was a relatively civilized affair. The candidates were generally congenial, stuck to discussing policy, and even made a conscious point of avoiding personal attacks.

The ensuing commentary, however, has been decidedly less civilized. As with most televised presidential debates, deciding who “won” is always an incredibly important—if totally irrelevant—discussion that begins almost immediately after the candidates stop speaking. In this case, the media appear to be in overall agreement: Tuesday night went to former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton, with senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont following closely behind.

Despite the fact that these are obviously subjective assessments, Bernie Sanders’s most vocal supporters—mainly educated, politically leftist white men—have lost their collective minds over what they see as an media-led plot to bring Bernie down.

“Tuesday night’s Democratic debate had hardly been over 24 hours before an alarming conspiracy theory began to form,” writes Amanda Marcotte for Salon; “that the media is in cahoots with the Clinton campaign to cover up the ‘fact’ that Bernie Sanders won the debate.” She cites a Change.org petition compiled by Sanders supporters (charmingly titled “CNN is CORRUPT”), that accuses “CNN, Time Warner, and ‘SuperPACs’ of somehow conspiring to cover up the truth.”

1. Great pic at the top! And great FINISH at the bottom!!!

...........Perhaps it’s a justifiable anger; but frankly, much of America is pretty “sick and tired” of being yelled at and ordered around by angry white men—on either end of the political spectrum. And building a campaign led and championed by flustered, shouting white guys is not good brand management in 2015. For one, it doubles down on this (incorrect) notion of Bernie Sanders as a cooky, red-faced Vermont hippy, glasses askew. But it also highlights a troubling habit of educated, left-minded young men: to condescend when they should be consensus-building, and belittle when they should be listening. These types seem to think they’re the only ones who truly know what’s best for this country. Don’t agree? Well you’re just a big idiot.

Case in point: When Black Lives Matter activists disrupted a Bernie Sanders rally in Seattle late this summer, Gawker’s Hamilton Nolan wrote a controversial essay discussing the “wisdom” of BLM protesters (repeatedly) “driving Sanders from the stage.”
“It is stupid, don’t do it,” Nolan wrote. “Do you want someone who will do the things that will actually address the issues you care about? Or do you want to be pandered to better? … Go shout at someone who deserves it.”
....Bernie lost his cool a bit on Tuesday night. And if he wants to put his politics to practice at the executive level, he’s got to figure out a way to get it back. If he can’t, his camp has to devise a strategy for repositioning or reigning in his more abrasive fans. For their part, Bernie’s supporters have two options: chill out, or get out of the way.

because Hillary's husband cut off my welfare check yet I'm voting for her, cuz, lol.

Anywho, it was basically a tie between Senators Clinton and Sanders which means advantage Clinton for now, since she is the front-runner and the debate clearly showed that Joe Biden is not needed....so advantage Clinton there as well.

But I don't think for myself, only angry white males can do that, apparently.

Now leaving that aside, I am all into Hate Week and I don't have time for all of this nonsense!

8. It's terrible that you would say such a thing

because it's so obviously untrue. After all, the Senator marched with MLK 50 years ago and said Sandra Bland's name during the debate. His followers know this, and embrace this, and understand that the critiques of Senator Sanders re: racial justice--not "social justice," but racial justice--come from a place of hoping to steer his campaign in a direction that is more inclusive, at least at the level of rhetoric if not policy.

84. The OP accuses Bernie supporters of being angry white men.

I remember when the rallying cry of "angry white men" got "angry white men" elected. Angry white bigots that brought us George Bush and the Tea Baggers.

An angry white male (AWM) is a pejorative reference to a white male holding what is viewed as a typically conservative viewpoint, especially in the context of U.S. politics, characterized by opposition to feminism, racial quotas, political correctness, affirmative action and other liberal policies.[1][2]

The term was popularized in reference to a political voting bloc which emerged in the early 1990s as a reaction to perceived injustices faced by white men in the face of affirmative action quotas in the workplace. The term later gained prominence in the 1994 federal elections in the US, in which a large number of neo-conservative, white voters turned out. This new voting bloc swept in the first Republican majority Congress since the 1950s. Subsequent scholarship has focused on the various factors that motivated the turnout, including the anti-black backlash triggered by the racial hoax perpetrated by Susan Smith.[3]

characterized by opposition to feminism, racial quotas, political correctness, affirmative action and other liberal policies.

The why is it (more often than not) "liberal" white men that ask for minorities to put their concerns on the backburner and ask minorities to prioritize class over race at all times and do so much whining about "identity politics"?

A kinder, gentler, "angry white man" is still an angry white man.

134. It is obviously sarcasm, yet it is close enough to truth to make people uncomfortable.

Just because you claim to be a liberal white/str8t/male, doesnt mean you dont BY DEFINITION have something in common with the assholes who are overtly racist and misogynist/homophobic and so on.

White males, left or right, are still white males who enjoy HEAPINGS full of privilege and that privilege blinds MANY of them (many, not all, but MANY) to anything going on around them. ANYTHING anyone else is experiencing just isnt as important as their needs.

Always been that way (NOT always gonna be that way, though)....change is coming and there aint nothing they can do about it.

But what I just said and what needs to be discussed about this cant be here, any REAL discussion of ACTUAL Racism is not allowed on DU at this point in time.

because I suffer from Stockholm Syndrome. Suffice it to say, though, that here are legitimate reasons to be angry--thousands, if not millions, of them. But it's the targets of the anger that confuse me during this Democratic Party primary. Well, that and the fact that "identity politics" are now disparaged on DU in the same way they might be on FR even as those who critique identity politics engage in them by talking, precisely, about identities. That shit really chaps my ass.

30. that comes from the stereotype of all gay men being wealthy and living a very "fashionable"

high end lifestyle.

because just the way media focuses on black males mostly in a negative way they are most likely to show gay men who are well to do. and people think gay men are mostly wealthy types who only care about their money and tax cuts for wealthy and other similar economic policies.

but we saw with SC verdict which legalized gay marriage the many others throughout this country who the media does not focus on.

12. I don't get why people get so riled up

Bernie and Hillary both did what they had to do. As far as I can tell both of them proved either could be the nominee. Both of them also had some less than adequate answers to questions. Bernie sounded uninformed on foriegn policy issues and Hillary still can't explain her iraq war vote strongly.
There is a small loud group of Bernie supporters who are so defensive on race they wind up sounding like tone deaf racists. They are angry when AA voters don't embrace Bernie. Most of the people I know are African American I can't think of one person who is firmly committed to a single candidate, so far no one running has presented a clear policy addressing inequality. But if someone points that out the black activist movement is attacked by some Bernie supporters. And sometimes done in overtly racist rhetoric.

16. I have a few questions

Do you not believe that the MSM, which includes CNN, is corrupt? Did you watch the undecided voters in their own focus group say Bernie Sanders won? Isn't it the undecided voters that are really the ones that call winners and losers in a political debate? Isn't that a great deal of the purpose of having debates?

Additionally, CNN shut down Bernie2016tv.com After saying that the debate was open for using, CNN did a sudden 180 and shut down the website for playing the debate. They've now stated that a political debate of the Democratic primary candidates, cannot be shown. Do you take any issue with that?

Why is it that people who have rallied against MSM, and CNN particularly of late, suddenly find it to be an impossibility that there's some dirty tricks going on? CNN, owned by Time Warner, Clinton's 7th largest contributor?

I'm not male. I'm not straight. And I would take great issue with deleting comments from Hillary supporters or shutting down a website for her supporters. Because it's wrong.

Yes the media is corrupt. However,

The BernieTV thing is a copyright issue. The debate is still available to watch elsewhere and a transcription is available.

Hillary Clinton supporter comments have been shut down from this very website for awhile now. Yes, it's wrong.

31. I appreciate your comments

The Bernie tv was a bullshit move. No one should be barred from airing a political debate. It never should have been on cable tv where some people don't have access. Even streaming is not available to everyone. And the copyright was given freely, then suddenly rescinded.

I'm not getting into who has been silenced here. You can't really want to go there. That's the extent of what I respond to about that.

My point is that the msm is, and obviously so, not reporting the full truth, like they've been doing for years. As much as anything else this debate was crap. The substance may have been better than the gop, but the reality is, it was limited in time to such a great degree that very few questions could be answered with detail by anyone, the questions were not the same to each candidate and the amount of time was not even close to being even.

We can debate the debate and who won until the cows come home. The reality is that corporate media made it into a Vegas style boxing match, with different rules for each candidate, with no time for anything serious, two hours with at least a half hour of commercial and fanfare among 5 candidates, is ridiculous.

And more than anything, it should never be on cable without ensuring that it has easily watched public access.

On that note, I'm going to bed. If you respond, I won't see it until the morning.

Nighty night

39. The debate is available in all forms, transcripts, video,

etc., You don't need BernieTV to see it or have access to it.

You may not want to go into the silencing, but it's happening. It's quite obvious at this point.

The debate was fine. It was the same as every other debate we've seen for years now. Clinton, Sanders and O'Malley did fine. 15 million viewers tuned it. That's great.

I do agree that it should have been aired on a public channel. I'm all for full access. However, in the age of the internet, access is out there. And again, 15 million people found a way to tune in. That's a record breaker.

36. Imagine, calling the office of an elected official!

Seriously? Yeah, I read something in the press, I don't see anything on the website from a congressman, his Facebook page or his Twitter, and I check. I've done it before and guess what? The press was wrong.

I also stated that I wouldn't be surprised if he does endorse her but at the time I called, it had not been made official.

The msm has been conspiring since long before now. If you don't know that, more's the pity.

Dear Sir/ Ms

Congratulations on the condescending tone and fatuous reasoning in your article on Bernie Sanders.
How luxurious it must be to sit back to judge and smear good people who are at the cutting edge of power, fighting desperately to avoid climate calamity and greedy power mongers' lust for dominance at the expense of the vast majority of the community.
I'm looking at this moment for your articles on the Bush/Cheney war crimes, the unlimited slaughter committed by your armed forces and their proxies over the last fifty years, and the criminal behaviour of Wall St and the Big banksters. Can you direct me? I'm sure the articles are couched in insouciant terms that meticulously avoid any journalistic responsibilities.

Dispassionately yours

people NOT like me think.

Do you know what I mean?

As a str8t white male, and knowing what I know about Hillary and the others, my brain and instincts tell me that Bernie is really quite something on all issues (other than guns).

And I believe this to this day, YET, what I dare not do is ignore the concerns of what appears to be millions of Black people, who seem to not be as thrilled about Bernie as I am.

I have to ask why, and the answer seems to have less to do with his positions and him, and more to do with what they call the BIG PICTURE.

You see in their world, evidently, they have to worry about every single word they say, clothing item they wear, attitude they take, and exactly what position their facial muscles are in depending on who they are talking to, and I never have to think about those things, or almost never.

I guess to them it matters more that the outright racist assholes aka teaparty/cons dont take power, because their very lives are at risk if they do.

I have the LUXURY of looking at the little picture and my ONE issue, my wallet. They do not.

Does that sound like anyone in the Sanders camp?

I'm not much of a Hillary supporter and still waiting for the dust to settle, but the haughty nature of many Bernie fans have turned me off completely. It's not that I disagree with the candidate's platform, but that I don't want people to think I'm in the more liberal than thou crowd and thus consider myself socially and morally superior.

It's like Kucinich 2004 all over again when his supporters took to DU to denounce anyone who didn't foresee a soon to be implemented Dept Of Peace. I was told then I may be a RW plant for not joining in Team Dennis, now I've literally been told that "moderate" is a dirty word in 2016 politics and could cost us the election.

I'm angry at business as usual corporatist politicians. I'm angry about rampant economic and social injustice.

I'm angry that my genetic birthright and best political instincts are huge impediments to realizing my dream of an America in which all people are finally treated equally and respectfully.

Mostly, I am angry that my country has a long, continuing and highly successful history of setting certain portions of the 99% against other portions of the 99%. And I continue to play right into this long and venerable tradition, despite my better intentions.

So-called complacent black female O'Malley supporter who is sick and tired of . . .

Perhaps it’s a justifiable anger; but frankly, much of America is pretty “sick and tired” of being yelled at and ordered around by angry white men—on either end of the political spectrum.

In 1997/1998 this then 25 year old black woman had a degree, purchased a condo outright, and made about 400k in telecom.

That was during the Clinton Administration.

Maybe young, angry, white male millenials could reach out to me to mentor them.

BTW - it was hell being the only black woman in that division - I was expected to give a level of effort my white male peers didn't, I did, and I won the game.

During this time I also started my own gift basket business. I only sold B2B. Was able to sell that little mom and pop business 7 years later at a tidy profit.

I see anger.

What I don't see is initiative. Chutzpah. Arrogance. Determination.

So excuse me while I'm complacent watching people run in circles and angry waiting for the Corporate, Bankster, Plutocrat, Oligarch Corporate Overlords to just say - you win. We are out.

Take a figurative club and take them out at the knees. Sometimes in America you've got to throw an elbow every now and then.

The behavior of the Clinton supporters is what is being described,
I don't know their races and genders...

The Clinton supporters were driven to distraction by the post-debate polling, and they attacked the results as being "spammed" which of course would indicate a conspiracy. That is a nasty accusation even when it is unspoken.
There has been no evidence to indicate that there was coordination.

There has been a nearly lock-step media that was in denial of its own polling.

There is a media-lead plot.
It is not to "bring Sanders down"
It IS to preserve their choice of corporate candidate.

The media wants Hillary to win now
So they can have her lose in the GE.

As with all things filtered through, and appropriated by, the dominant culture, victimhood is a prized commodity.

The claim to victimhood cancels out all notions of White Privilege. "How can you accuse me of White Privilege when I'm a victim, too?"

So, we have Sanders cast as a victim, which allows his followers to cast themselves victims as well - and they have little patience for what they perceive as competing claims of victimhood from those groups who have actually been historically oppressed.

As it happens, I read that Atlantic piece the OP is outraged about earlier today, after coming across it when a search for articles about Ta-Nehisi Coates winning one of the 2015 MacArthur Genius Grants brought me to the Atlantic. I thought the "Berniebro" piece was mildly amusing and mostly accurate, but no big deal.

I guess it was a big deal to the Bernie supporters, though, judging from the thread at the link above.

Are they somehow laboring under the impression that their participation is a REFUTATION of this OP?? Because if they think that, they are woefully and hilariously mistaken.

65. re: OP's headline... I don't think article calls fan base angry white males

The key quote seems to be

much of America is pretty “sick and tired” of being yelled at and ordered around by angry white men—on either end of the political spectrum. And building a campaign led and championed by flustered, shouting white guys is not good brand management in 2015.

The angry white guys the author was referring to there appear to be Sanders himself and three writers pro-Sanders essays, Fredrik DeBoer, Adam Johnson, and Hamilton Nolan... two of whom, in an author's update, said that they were not actually Sanders supporters.

He does also talk about "a troubling habit of educated, left-minded young men: to condescend when they should be consensus-building" -- it is unclear whether he feels that is a phenomenon limited to those who are white and/or those who support Sanders... I suspect not.

Regardless, his AWM comments seem to refer specifically to Sanders and some vocal supporters (who mostly ended up not being supporters), without referring to AWM as being his fan base overall.

At ay rate, both sides have their fanatical supporters. I would guess that HRC's lean more female. Not sure that's relevant, though. (Also not sure that fanatical Sanders fans include more males than females.)

Overall, I'd say the angry white male demographic is probably more Republican altogether.

73. I agree the AWM demographic is probably largely Republican but as I've noted time and again

there is a large subset of the angry white left that is braying equally as loudly at the rapid demise of white, male supremacy in this country. It's not just Republicans.

82. White people and especially white men

are simply not used to being questioned as far as intentions, motives, and actions.

And frankly, yes, Bernie Sanders has a bit of that in him...yes, for different reasons that those who vote Republican do, but the anger is still there.

Just when I thought this topic had been covered to death and that everyone saw and recognized what the problem was, a big old turd about Stockholm Syndrome was dropped into GDP which didn't do a damn thing but show that some people will never, ever, EVER learn anything about anything.

83. Interesting article

I suppose this could be its core thesis?

Perhaps it’s a justifiable anger; but frankly, much of America is pretty “sick and tired” of being yelled at and ordered around by angry white men—on either end of the political spectrum.

91. I don't see a lot of difference between BS fans, and the folks who would normally support Ron Paul.

Honestly, there's something oddly "libertarian" about their behavior. DU'ers have been saying this, even some BS supporters, all along. It's nice to see it acknowledged.

The author must have been listening to NPR since the debate, because he has nailed the BS Brigade perfectly. Damn near every call is "BS won the debates, the polls say so"...and then they generally wander off into some vague conspiracy shit where the host has to pretend to humor them. It's kinda sad.

130. I didn't know that, but it explains a lot.

I gave up Ayn Rand for Bernie Sanders: How I grew up and traded libertarianism for a progressive “socialist”

Edwin Lyngar

http://www.salon.com/2015/07/20/why_libertarians_should_love_bernie_sanders/

The rise of Bernie Sanders feels familiar to me. When I was a libertarian-leaning Republican, I was a delegate for Ron Paul in the 2008 Nevada State Convention. Paul’s supporters were passionate if a bit nutty, but change seemed, if only for a moment, possible. The problem was that the ideology behind the candidate was bankrupt. The experience was the beginning of the end of my affiliation with simplistic libertarian blather and GOP politics altogether, but Paul’s rise was driven by the same frustration and anger that is now propelling Sanders.

Looks like the AWM demographic is all sewn up, which is why people get viciously attacked if they aren't "Feeling the Bern".

The Liberty Union Party is a socialist, anti-capitalist party, so it pretty much flies in the face of everything Ayn Rand stood for. The OP makes some fair points though.

102. Enough is enough

I am angry and I'm not white

I'm angry at the same old politics

I'm angry with white HRC supporters acting like they care about black people's problems . you cry after mass shootings, but what about the kids in my neighborhood(black and brown kids) that get killed with little or no media coverage ?where are the cries than? Where have you been in the past when cops have been killing black men ? ( police bruality Its not a new issue).
When black families I have seen foreclosure on by banks that given Money to HRC, it angers me when she take no position on breaking up these vulture institutions or being non of theme responsible instead she says she told them to "cut it out"

I'm angry at black HRC supporters who will sell out for crumbs not ask whole loaf of bread. You don't think democrats most loyal base deserve more than we have been getting?

If HRC ends up being the president you think she will give a damn about us once she reaches office .

103. To be frank with you

I've said the same thing about Hillary Clinton...20 years ago, she was all for locking up all of the crackheads (and, of course, "super-predators" in urban (read: black) areas but now, in 2016, Clinton rolls out a plan to actually provide comprehensive treatment for drug addiction now that rural people in New Hampshire are having issues with heroin...Hmmmmm...

My thing is, I don't think that Bernie Sanders (the elected official) gives all that much of a shit about black people either other than the fact that he needs black votes. There are some black people in Vermont and his record there is decidedly mixed.

So I don't think that Bernie Sanders will give a damn all that much, either. So as far as I am concerned, the whole race issue w/r/t Sanders and Clinton is pretty much a wash...both have their good points and bad points.

How many times do we have to say this before it sinks in?

In my case, though I'm not a HRC supporter, my preferring her over Bernie is NOT based in what she would do for Black folks; but rather, in my estimation, she is the more electable of the two, i.e., can beat the gop in the G/E.

My preference between the two is purely defense.

126. That in part

Here in Illinois, there's another factor; the Senate election.

IMO, either Sanders or Clinton would win Illinois in a GE. But we need to get Mark Kirk out of the Senate and we (or rather the Illinois Machine) plan on doing that with Tammy Duckworth (whom I don't particularly care for).

With Sanders on the ballot, I would worry about turnout and picking off some Downstate Dems whereas I would nt have that worry with Hillary (who was born here and knows this state very well)

107. I feel this way about Sanders

He's selling me something without giving me details.

No details - no vote. Sanders talks about breaking up the banks . . . He promises revolution.

How about a revolution from within?

Because O'Malley is giving me specific ways oversight of the banking industry can be achieved - without throwing a buch of people out on the street. He's showing us the framework. That mid level analyst at Chase does not deserve to lose her job.

But her boss should go to jail if she bets the farm on derivatives.

All I'm getting from Sanders is slogans and plug lines. It's not enough. He's been in D.C. For what? 30 years.

It's not enough.

I want someone who has never been in DC for the President. You don't trust the standard operating procedure Democrats?

I don't trust D.C. anymore than I trust Trenton.

and this Black person (or millions of them) were

instantly told that Bernie marched with MLK and therefore they are to have no concerns.

It is the same ole tired bullshit, white men telling someone what to do or think.

It has the expected result.
