Firewomen prove they exist to four-year-old Esme

19 January 2019

Esme has been inspired by messages from firewomen

Firewomen have posted pictures of themselves on social media after a four-year-old girl said she thought only men could sign up.

Hannah Summers from London tweeted how her daughter Esme wished she was a boy so she could be a firefighter, as she only saw firemen in the books she read.

It prompted women firefighters across the country to post videos and pictures on Twitter to prove they exist.

Ms Summers later tweeted Esme "firmly believes she can be a firefighter".

1. BBC story and links there v interesting. Only 7% of English, AND US firefighters are women

IIRC 1 of earliest women firefighters was in Iowa City. She had a v difficult time fighting prejudice from men in the dept.

BBC story has link to an article about a US training camp run by women firefighters for young women who want to find out if they can do the job
