Navy: F-35 decision on track amid delays
22 hours ago • By Mike Eiman Staff Reporter

Despite earlier estimates, the Navy says it won’t make a final decision on where to base its West Coast fleet of F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft until later this fall.

U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va. Said in a press release this week that the Department of the Navy is continuing its work to prepare a final record of decision, which will identify either Naval Air Station Lemoore or Naval Air Facility El Centro as the home base for the new jets.

The decision, to be issued by the office of the Secretary of the Navy, will also address comments received on the final Environmental Impact Statement.

If NASL is selected, it would require about 1.6 million square feet of new construction to support training maintenance and personnel. By 2028, 100 of the new F-35C aircraft would be stationed in Lemoore, a 30-jet training squadron and including 70 jets FA-18 Hornet aircraft with the newer F-35C.
