Air Force Academy's cyber team reaches rare heights

Members of the Air Force Academy's Cadet Cyber Team run through exercise scenarios, preparing for an upcoming cyber competition. The USAFA Cyber Competition team, which has showcased its cyber-prowess in a growing number of cyber competitions worldwide. In September, the team placed 10th of 349 undergraduate teams from the United States and Canada in the New York University Poly Cyber Security Awareness Week Capture the Flag Qualifiers. The Air Force Academy Cyber Team won the NSA's Cyber Defense Exercise, for 2012 and 2013, as well as taking the cyber trophy in 2003 and 2006.

The team practices four days a week, two hours at a crack.

Members hone their speed and skills, with each gaining specialized skills. And they only sweat when an Internet server crashes.

Meet the Air Force Academy's cyber team, 16 computer warfare students who are ranked fifth in the world.

"We're the top team in the Western Hemisphere," said coach Martin Carlisle, explaining that the four teams they fell behind in a recent 105-team competition hail from Russia and Eastern Europe.
