Related: About this forumNo Burglars Shot And Killed In Chicago, Several Shot And Killed This Year In Houston
Houston has about 2.1+ million people, Chicago has about 2.7+ million. From time to time I do Google news searches for "burglar shot", "robber shot", or "attacker shot" looking for self-defense cases with something unusual about them. Most of the time I don't post the news because there isn't anything special about it that really merits discussion. In the months that I have been doing those Google searches I have noticed that certain cities tend to come up more often than ther cities.
I have never seen a justifiable homicide cases from Chicago, indicating that robbery and burglary are fairly safe occupations there.
Houston, and other parts of Texas also, frequently have a story on a burglar or robber legally killed by an armed citizen. Therefore it appears that being a burglar or armed robber in Texas, (And in other states with similar laws.) is a highly hazardous profession.

(6,268 posts)I seem to remember reading a pair of justifiable homicide stories in the chicago area in the past year. Not sure what the scumbags were doing (robbery, rape, assault...) but I do remember the stories.

(13,200 posts)judging by the number of stories you are able to dredge up.
Houston has 1295 burglaries per 100,000 population while Chicago has 845. Your theory that gunning down burglars makes you safer from crime is not sound.

(911 posts)The only way to test your hypothesis would be to examine 2 parallel universes - The one we live in and one in which Houston had the same gun laws as Chicago. Since that's not possible any conclusion we draw is pure supposition. However...
I'll make the following two assumptions with a very high degree of confidence:
1) The number of available burglars over the course of a year is not infinite.
2) There is no universal law, physical or metaphysical, that requires any given number of burglaries be committed.
Given the above, I feel equally confident in the following hypothesis; If there had been 27195 burglars shot (((2100000)/100000)*1295) then there would have been a statistically significant decrease in burglaries in Houston. The conclusion, then, is that not enough burglars are getting shot.

(17,502 posts)which is different than burglary. It is safer to do a home invasion in Chicago, but burglary is just as safe in either place. Of course, if your casing skills suck, all bets are off.
rfranklin
(13,200 posts)The term "home invasion" is somewhat fluid and can include burglaries without assault.

(10,164 posts)Home invasions aren't recorded as such by law enforcement, and different agencies assign them to different categories.
