Veteran shoots home invader in 2009, then again in 2011

Trouble doesn't care if it has visited you before, or if it has never visited you. It can come visiting without an appointment.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said an "out-of-control" man asked to be killed by breaking into the Winter Haven home of a U.S. Navy veteran Sunday morning.

The man, identified as 40-year-old Christopher Brian Deese of Auburndale, broke into one home and then went to William Cornwell's front door about 3:55 a.m. and started banging on it, deputies said.

The noise awoke Cornwell's wife, Traci, who told deputies he was screaming to be let in but she had no idea who the man was.

Her husband got his gun and told the intruder several times to leave, but the man outside kept screaming.

Cornwell, 33, who works as a security guard, opened his door and continued yelling at the man through a screen door. (Very stupid mistake. My words, not the article's.)

Instead of heeding the warnings, the man ran into the home where Cornwell's two children, ages 3 and 6, were sleeping.

Cornwell then fumbled with the gun, and a shot went off into the floor. Deputies said Deese then stopped briefly, took off his shirt and yelled, "You wanna fight?," and charged at Cornwell.

A bullet from Cornwell's gun pierced Deese's chest, killing him.

In 2009, Cornwell wounded a man who broke into his Lake Wales home. Police captured the invader, who fled the scene after being shot twice.

Personally, I fault the veteran for opening his main door. He should have kept it closed, called 911, and been ready to shoot if the attacker bust in the main door. He surrendered an huge tactical advantage in opening the main door. He made it easier for the violence that followed to happen. And he should have had the his gun ready and not fumbled with it once the bad guy was inside. He is quite lucky to be alive after this fiasco, and of course, the drunk guy is dead.

I am a strong advocate of Castle Doctrine, but in the Middle Ages they didn't leave the drawbridge down for invaders.

Reporters were asking why the suspect was shot 68 times.

Afterwards, when called upon by the media to make a statement about the manhunt and its outcome, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told various reporters, "That's all the bullets we had or we would have shot him more. Quite frankly, we weren't taking any chances."

Why I want to protect my home I would not have opened it. I don't agree at all with shooting someone through a door. The Courts have seen that differently here.
Should have called 911 and stayed behind the locked door.
