Man arrested after trying to carry an assault weapon, ammo onto a plane at Newark airport

NEWARK — A 23-year-old Indiana man was arrested for trying to carry an assault rifle and 70 rounds of ammunition onto a flight at Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday night, the Port Authority of New York a and New Jersey said.

The man was stopped by Transportation Security Administration screeners after he entered a checkpoint in Terminal A at 6:40 p.m., carrying the weapon and three high- capacity magazines in a soft-shell gun case, said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police. Pentangelo said the man was headed for a Southwest Airlines flight to Chicago.

TSA called Port Authority Police officers to the checkpoint and the man was arrested without incident, Pentangelo said.

The man, Adam Urbano of Valparaiso, Ind., was charged with unlawful possession assault firearm, a 2nd degree crime, and possession of large capacity ammunition magazine, a 4th degree crime. Pentangelo said Urbano did not have any paperwork for the gun.

Why this guy didn't read the instruction before using is perplexing, and costly.

But it would have been nice if TSA had shown him how to properly pack and transport his firearm.

or was it part of his carryon luggage?

The man was...carrying the weapon and three high- capacity magazines in a soft-shell gun case...

Urbano told police that he had flown from Chicago's Midway Airport on April 17, when he checked the gun with Southwest and then picked it up at the baggage carousel after arriving at Newark Liberty, though police could not confirm the account...(A) report of the incident did not include an explanation by Urbano as to why he then tried to carry the weapon on board his return flight.

The TSA says passengers can travel with unloaded firearms in checked bags if they are properly declared and packed in a hard-side case, locked, and separated from ammunition.

The police could not confirm his account because it couldn't possibly have happened.

He wouldn't have been able to check the gun at any U.S. airport if it was in a soft-shell case. And he wouldn't have been able to check it through to New Jersey because the gun he had is banned there. Neither of which, of course, explains why he tried to carry it on board. What IS probably true is that he purchased the gun after his flight from Chicago.

Part of being a responsible gun owner is knowing how to transport your weapons properly.
