Saxet Gun Show will not renew contract

AUSTIN -- The Saxet Gun Show will not sign a new contract with Travis County. Show organizers said they would never agree to anything that goes above and beyond what is required by state and federal law.

After an ongoing debate between Saxet Gun Show owner Gus Cargile and commissioners at the end of last month ended without a vote on whether or not to continue the show's contract, it seemed the show would have to find a new location. The issue is over background checks.

Criticism of gun shows and the lack of checks mandated for individual sellers who attend rose nationwide following mass shootings like the ones at the Colorado movie theater and the Connecticut elementary school.

1. Hopefully it can be moved to another venue.

Before last year I'd only bought a few guns at funshows. Then for some reason for the past few shows the prices on handguns have been great.

Hit the funshow, handle every firearm you're interested in, find the best price and leave happy.

2. A wonderful opportunity for

Williamson, Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Blanco and Burnet counties to make a good deal of money and deprive Travis county of same.

It certainly won't affect the number of firearms in Travis County...and the county will still need to expend monies to upkeep the facilities that they would have rented out otherwise. All in all, it sounds like a lose-lose by Travis County commissioners.

3. Since federal law prohibits individuals from using NICS to do background checks,

what were the owners going to provide so that background checks could be done?

4. Next SAXET will be in Dripping Springs, just SW of Austin.

Since the facility is smaller, they will concentrate on "higher end" sales. Hopefully, by this they mean dropping the endless reams of surplus and deer jerky fit for a bandolier. The rental cost for the facility is a small fraction of the Travis County Expo Center. Travis Co. will miss out on a dozen wk ends of rental income from a group with an excellent safety record.

And LEOs won't have a central facility to pick up the few stupid bottom-feeders who try to squeeze into the almighty Gun Show Loophole, Inc.
