Regarding background checks

The current NICS applies only to sales from FFLs. There has been a lot of talk about requiring a background check for non-FFL sales. What reasons are given as arguments against this idea?

I don't much care if you happen to be for or against the idea of expanding the background check requirements or if you find any particular reason for or against the idea especially appealing. I'm not looking for you to make a case pro or con unless you feel motivated, I'm actually just looking for those reasons.

Thanks

In practice they are an unworkable invasion of privacy. Transfers of firearms between a merchant and a customer are a business transaction and can be regulated as such. Guns are actually not being regulated, but a business transaction as defined by that relationship. Personal relationships are, well, personal and there is really no way to regulate that without violating people's privacy. The Snowden leak affair is an ironic counterpoint to the universal background check controversy.

Here's an old OP on the subject, but don't kick it.

If every "transfer" has to go through NICS, when transfer is defined as me handing a gun to someone else. It would be much better to have a national FOID card that identifies a person as having been checked out and OK to possess a gun. No need to go through the check each time you touch someone else's gun.

If a shady stranger is buying my gun, then he's my friend!

See how that works?
