Olympian, Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius charged with murder in shooting of girlfriend
By Associated Press, Published: February 13 | Updated: Thursday, February 14, 3:36 PM

PRETORIA, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee sprinter dubbed the Blade Runner, was charged Thursday in the Valentine’s Day slaying of his girlfriend at his upscale home in South Africa, a shocking twist to one of the feel-good stories of last summer’s Olympics.

<...>

What sparked the shooting remained unclear, but police said they had received calls in the past about domestic altercations at the home of the 26-year-old athlete, who has spoken publicly about his love of firearms.

<...>

Firearms captivated Pistorius, the subject of an online Nike advertisement that featured him with the caption: “I am a bullet in the chamber.” In November 2011, he posted a photograph on Twitter of himself at a shooting range, bragging about his score. “Had a 96% headshot over 300m from 50shots! Bam!” he wrote.

The perfectionism and combative mindset essential to success for Olympic athletes can also disrupt the transition to life beyond elite sport and cause depression, according to an international study.

While many former Olympians make the adjustment smoothly and eventually excel at new projects, others struggle to cope with life away from intense training and competition.

Based on anonymous interviews with eight former summer and winter Olympians, Steven Rynne, from the University of Queensland’s School of Human Movement Studies, and colleagues from Switzerland and Britain said the process of changing social networks and re-entering the workforce could be overwhelming for competitors who require certain qualities to succeed in their sports.

“Given that Olympians require an exceptional range of characteristics such as determination and patience, one would assume that such characteristics would guarantee success in life after their sporting careers,“ Dr Rynne said. "Our research suggests that this is not always the case.

Retiring Olympic Athletes May be at Risk of Substance Abuse, Studies Suggest
By Join Together Staff | August 1, 2012 | 1 Comment | Filed in Addiction, Drugs, Mental Health, Research & Young Adults
Olympic athlete 8-1-12

Several recent studies are shedding light on why athletes may be more prone than the general population to substance abuse, eating disorders and suicide. The findings may have implications for athletes retiring after the Summer Olympics, Bloomberg Businessweek reports.

Research indicates that intensive exercise can be as addictive as heroin, which puts retiring Olympic athletes at risk of depression, according to the article. A study published in March found one-third of elite athletes have an unhealthy preoccupation with training. Another recent study, conducted in rats, suggests the biological mechanisms of exercise dependence tend to mimic those involved in drug addiction.

The studies suggest retiring athletes might need help adjusting after years spent training nonstop.

“A lot of retired athletes report fairly significant mental health concerns and an increased level of substance dependence,” said Frances Quirk, Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Performance Enhancement & Health. “There are other factors that contribute to that in terms of pressure, isolation and competition, but there is a biological story.”

But it is not surprising the level of compassion displayed from people who demand compassion after tragedies such as this. You know, like those who declare that "gun nuts" who shamelessly defend/advance their own agendas in the wake of obvious tragedies like Sandy Hook.

Yup...

It indeed seems very "progressive" to demean people in need of help if they are outside of the fold.

Do hope we have a good spring bluebonnet bloom in Texas, but the drought/climate change is sucking up all the water.

If you can't cite a specific rule from the DU Terms of Service then stop trying to enforce a rule that does not exist.

Read the Statement of Purpose:

Statement of Purpose

Discuss gun politics, gun control laws, the Second Amendment, the use of firearms for self-defense, and the use of firearms to commit crime and violence.

Nowhere in the Statement does it say anything about limiting stories to the US. The posted story clearly is a story about the use of firearms to commit crime and violence, which is explicitly covered as part of the SOP of the group.

You are trying to stop me from posting, and I have as much right to post as you do.

I think that you are another gun-banner who is trying to use that story to push for more gun control in the U.S., therefore I point out that it happened there under their laws, not here under ours.
