GOP takes Orwellian-speak to new lows w/discrimininatory "First Amendment Defense Act"

Stop efforts to allow the firing of employees for “religious reasons,” including if they’re LGBT or single and pregnant.

Employers will be allowed to fire people based on their religious beliefs even if the company is for-profit if legislation being pushed by U.S. Republicans passes. This would not only protect religious officiants from being punished for refusing to participate in a same-sex weddings, it would allow the firing of employees for being LGBTQ or of pregnant single women if they believe having sex out of wedlock is a sin.

Once again, homophobic and anti-women politicians are trying to sneak in the ability of people in power to actively discriminate against others under the guise of “protecting religious freedom.” This so-called “First Amendment Defense Act” is so vaguely worded that Ian Thompson of the American Civil Liberties Union said that it “clearly encompasses discrimination against single mothers.”

It’s bad enough that Republicans are trying so hard to roll back much-needed progress for LGBTQ people in terms of employment discrimination. Crafting a bill so vague that it allows for an assortment of additional types of discrimination is beyond unacceptable. Sign this petition to demand that this bill be withdrawn immediately.
