For my cat lovers DU Friends

After my Angie passed, I went to the shelter and picked a sleeping kitty I named Ruby. She was a bigger and younger kitty and now at about 4 years old, I’m about to have a series of eye surgeries n I’m off to the vet tomorrow and thinking of asking her to re home Ruby. I do not want to go back to the shelter.. I know what happens. She’s the sweetest cat but I fear that I’m not making her happy..I live in a condo n she does not get enough stimulation with other people or space. I’m in pain about doing this.. I love her but I don’t think I’m giving her what she needs to be a happy cat.what is the best option for her w/o being selfish? I don’t want to make an emotional decision only what’s right for her.

1. May Lady Bast send you the wisdom for the correct choice.

And may your surgeries be successful.

3. Could you possibly put the word out

among friends, neighbors and family that you feel your current health precludes you from caring for her adequately and you’d be happy if one of them could adopt her?

But it would be nice if a friend or family member could take Ruby in.

7. Please keep her. She's already attached.

They just want to be with you and have a stable and loving home. No need to send her away.

9. That's all they want, Deuxcents. Just that.

You've shown it by your post. Ruby is with a good person who cares for her. Cats can be hard to read. Get a little mouse on a stick or one for her to bat around, talk to her, let her hang with you. Slow-blink at her. She'll probably slow-blink or make squinty eyes back. If her tail is straight up when she runs toward you, she's happy. Cats are very sensitive to change. Keep her and give her the wonderful home you have.

13. I agree with Better Days Ahoy

Is she really giving any indication that she's unhappy or are you just feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment due to the impending surgeries? Cats don't require a lot. Food, water, litter box, and love in whatever form they like it. Some like to cuddle, some do not... but most of them are not high maintenance. They do get attached to their person and they don't like change very much. She's yours and she doesn't care how old you are, she won't care if you have a little difficulty getting around for a few weeks, and she doesn't care if you live in a condo. You love her. Just keep doing what you can and she will be fine.

19. Ruby sounds happy with you Deuxcents,

She won the lottery if you went to the shelter and chose her. She has a caring, concerned person of her own who gave her a condo for a domain. There is food and vet care, what a wonderful life she won ! I have had dogs most of my life and took in my first cat to be a mouser among the dogs. As the dogs passed and my work life involved extensive travel I found the domestic kitty I had was most resilient and independent. She didn't require walks and didn't really have a designated mealtime like dogs who would gobble up everything and wait for the next meal. Cats do well with the free feeding unless its a diet which requires portion control. Then there are auto feeders. Cats are so used to their environment they freak out if there is a change. To me, anyway, they love permanence and a change might be sad for Ruby if she loses her condo and you.
I think she sounds content, which is all I think anyone can ask you, human or critter.
Take care and I hope all goes well with the eye surgeries, Ruby will be delighted to welcome you home from the hospital.

P.S. on edit, when you come from the hospital or anywhere she just might look up sleepily and yawn and say "oh there you are, where are the treats?" My cats could care less after my multiple monthly trips I make. When I come home, they think its treat time and kitty clean up time and don't really show too much else. LOL.

20. I am reading all the loving and encouraging and supportive replies here, and

just want to add another comment. As I am reading, my gorgeous lap panther is curled in my lap. He is my little rescue., and my heart. He is perfectly content. . .who am I k8dding. . DEMANDS to spend most of his time curled in my lap or right next to me. He does not miss the outdoors from which he was rescued.

Hold and love each other. Be happy.

22. Thank you, my DU Friends.. I so appreciate the support

There were points made I had not considered..always good to have opinions n be level headed about decisions so emotional. Having cataract surgery on both my eyes this month n I’ll be loving the cuddles w/ Ruby. Thanks so much 🙏
