Related: About this forumIn memory of my beloved dog, Tag.
I can hardly breathe. In two hours, we'll be at the vet for the last time. Tag is 14 years old...he's tired, painful and he has let me know that things aren't fun for him any more.
Tag was born in 2007 on a working sheep ranch at the base of the Mission Mountains. He was a ball of black and white fuzz that was hell on wheels for his first two years of life. I named him Tag because nobody could catch him when he didn't want to be caught. He was head strong and I loved that about him. Even when he chewed the legs off of an antique chair, or ate a new pair of Birkenstocks, I just couldn't be mad at him.
Tag loved to catch anything thrown through the air...and he could indeed catch anything! It was years before we could take him fishing because he would try to catch your fly out of the air before it hit the water. Tag would try to catch snow flakes falling in the winter and rain drops in the summer.
Tag wasn't just an average border collie, Tag epitomized the breed...he loved herding his backyard chickens and anything else that needed to be organized in a group. Tag herded me and the lawnmower, me and the laundry basket, me and the shopping bags. He herded my son and his friends when they were small...he had a collection of balls that he would herd together when he got bored. He would herd minnows at the creek. If it moved, Tag would herd it.
When Tag came into my life, I had a toddler underfoot, a grandma, parents and a brother. My son is now 16 and all the family I had are gone. Tag got me through a lot of loss...whenever I was sad, he would nudge to take him for a walk or throw the Frisbee so that I would feel better and he was right....every. single. time.
I will miss Tag's endless cheer and his enthusiasm for life. I will miss his wet nose nudges and watching him snooze on the lawn on sunny summer afternoons...always with his head upright, of course, so I would know he was working.
I know all dogs are angels...but this boy truly is. He's the dog of my life. I will miss him terribly.

(9,895 posts)My family is confronting a similar situation with our 12-year old dog now as she is showing signs of canine diabetes, hip problems and general aging.
It never gets easier when we lose anyone or anything we love forever. Hold on to the wonderful memories of a life-long relationship (and thank you for sharing them), such memories have helped me in the past when we have lost other beloved pets.
May your sorrows be short-lived, your happier memories last a lifetime and may Tag live forever in your dreams.

(34,095 posts)I am so sorry. I just lost the dog of my life 2 weeks ago. We only had him for a year and a half but he was the most wonderful rescue...wait, the most wonderful dog we ever had. I can understand your pain is magnified by all the life experiences so I am really sad for you. It hurts so much and he was such a good dog, yes they are angels. I tell myself that Elvin was needed by someone else who was in pain. I dunno if it helps you like it kinda does me but it sounds like that is exactly what your Tag would be doing.
Be at peace. It is just simply the hardest thing to get over but you will and he will smile at you from the Rainbow Bridge (sorry, that damned bridge had better be there or there will be hell to pay). Many hugs and much understanding.

(9,657 posts)to call the time when that last visit to the vet is necessary. Dogs, cats....doesn't matter, it's always heart-wrenching for a loved companion.
Our doggie has been gone several years, unreplaced, but we get to visit with/dogsit our kids' dogs as proxies often enough. That's what we tell ourselves, anyway.
That's a fine photo of Tag - a challenging playface as if to say: "So YOU want to play fetch with ME, with THIS ball? I might let you grab it, I might not. Well come on, what YOU waiting for?"

He knew your moods and you knew his. The language you built over the years became automatic. It was understood.
So very sorry for your loss. Please take care of yourself. Tag will be there when you need him!

(1,513 posts)It makes me ache to read this. Ive put down a lot of dogs in the last decade. Two were 15 and one 13-14 when the end came. One had a genetic small dog problem with his throat and when he couldnt breathe without coughing and he couldnt lie down we knew that we had to end his pain.
I miss them all.
Dogs just dont live long enough. But they make our lives so much better and richer that the pain of their passing must simply be endured. I cant imagine a life without dogs.
Tag was especially cool and sounds like he was a constant source of joy.
For what it is worth you have my most sincere condolences.

(6,543 posts)Knowing that it is the loving thing to do does not make that last trip together any easier. However it becomes a kindness for our fur babies when the pain of their last months overtake them. The love that you have for Tag and that he has for you has created great memories. May those memories help you through your grief. Tag is herding sheep and speeding around as he waits for you just across the Rainbow Bridge. May you receive peace and comfort as you grieve your loss.

(143 posts)Wishing you the best through this difficult time. I had to smile when you mentioned Tag herding minnows. We had a Border Collie - Aussie mix for 15.5 years and she absolutely had to have order all the time (no fast moving anything). We had to lock her in the house with the shades drawn just so our kids could use the swing-set.
May Tag live forever in your hearts. He sounds like a very special dog (they are all special in their own ways).

(28,117 posts)Tag reminds me so much of my dear Patty (Patches, as she had a patch over half her face). She was a beautiful black & white Border Collie & had a beautiful soul just like your most dear, sweet Tag.
It helped me to create a memorial of pictures in the house to our passed furbabies. I never want to forget even the small details about them. I wrote a long letter about my Patty which I included on the backs of her photos.
Sending gentle hugs.

(50,259 posts)All I can say is that two spirits like yours and Tags are destined to be reunited dont know where, dont know when
but believe itll happen.
Did you ever think that maybe the last 14 years was already some kind of fulfillment of a reunited destiny from a prior time? Things happen in cycles
Life is bigger than we can ever fully realize
. And dogs want you to love every moment of it
