I haven't posted in this group before, but I wanted to share this photo anyway.
This is our newest, Otis (at 8 weeks). He's our third Golden (the other two went to the bridge some years ago), and it's been over 15 years since we've had a puppy - boy did we forget how "puppyish" they are! He joins me, DUer Rambis, our 2 little humans, and our two black cats - lots of busy fun at our house!

(26,117 posts)They have to be cute, so we don't disown them when they chew, dig, pee, run off...all that fun puppy stuff.

(18,219 posts)And look at how nice he is sitting for his picture! Obedient already???? That face just looks like pure happiness and joy.
Make a point to come around here more often and let us know how things are going. We like kitty pictures too!

(26,117 posts)not so good at "come" - he likes to bolt into the neighbors' yard - argh!
We're working on it.

(18,219 posts)"Come" isn't easy for the impulsive. I am using treats when he does get there, hoping that sooner or later he will relate coming to me when called with a treat.
Good luck. I am sure that he will learn it. He is still just a baby!

(26,117 posts)My favorite time is when he's still groggy after a nap - he's very cuddly then.

(32,004 posts)I don't do puppies. The youngest I've successfully rescued and kept has been 11 mos. (of course with a Lab they are still puppyish at 2-3). You are very brave to have a puppy, kids, and cats!
cyberswede
(26,117 posts)That won't work so well when he weighs 75 lbs!
And it seems harder to train him with more of us around - too many cooks, I guess. He does well for me and Rambis, but he doesn't see the kids as alpha humans at all, so he gives them a hard time.
It's great that you raise rescue dogs.

(32,004 posts)my 2 year old is a beautiful AKC son of a puppy champion - just gorgeous. But he was even a pseudo-rescue because I bought him from the original owners. I guess he wouldn't hunt or got too big for them or something. He definitely was mischievous at 11 mos. but he's beautifully trained and smart. Awesome with my kids - he lets them do anything.

(26,117 posts)It took me until tonight to figure out how to get the photo off my iPad and into Photobucket (turns out there's an app for that! LOL)

(11,065 posts)Puppies are very very good at forcing you to remember what puppyhood is like.
I hope you have many many happy and loving years with your new furry family member!

(26,117 posts)We lost our first Golden at 10 yrs. to cancer, and our second passed a few years ago at 15. Both were gone too soon.
This is the first time we've had a puppy and kids - I know they'll have a great time with the dog (and cats).

(3,702 posts)It was been over 10 yrs since we have had a puppy, as much as I miss it puppyhood (puppy breath, the zooms, the instant nap) I don't miss the total destruction having Lab puppies was.
You are so lucky to have such a cutie addition to your family!!!
My husband keeps sniffing his head 'cause he loves the puppy smell! And the naps are so cute, as well as needed respite from chasing him around as he tries to chew everything in sight!

(26,117 posts)We hoped our 11 year old could do more with him, but training has been harder for him than we thought. Oh well, he can still scoop the yard.

(41,694 posts)I'm going through puppyness with Marcy. I've had her for 4 months now and at least she's a year old now but when she gets excited she forgets everything she's learned.
cyberswede
(26,117 posts)though it's cute that they can still be puppies, even as they get older - when they get excited, they just let it all hang out without inhibitions - people never get to do that.

(26,117 posts)But I think they're both surprised by the amount of work involved (training, scooping, walking, etc.)
The cats aren't happy.

(12,904 posts)I predict that you will have a stone blast together! Did he come with tennis balls?
cyberswede
(26,117 posts)but our 9 y.o. daughter promptly bought him a bright orange one, just for him. (We have other yellow ones around from the other dogs, and even the occasional tennis game! lol)

(204,774 posts)I've been there, adopted a puppy after caring for older dogs for most of my life. He was well worth it and I hope to have him with me for the next 20 years... Your pup is not only as cute as they come, but looks so eager to please... Thanks for sharing him with us!

(26,117 posts)Right now we're trying to get the training thing down - it's harder than I remember!

(443 posts)what a wonderful breed. The guy that owned her and died was a WWII vet and so she never got any exercise. Took her to the vet today and found out shes 103 lbs. But what an awesome dog. Have fun with yours.

(26,117 posts)We had one that got to over 110, I think. He still thought he was a lap dog! Goldens are so smart and affectionate - but oh boy - the shedding!! I don't look forward to that part.

(26,117 posts)We love the psychotic episodes when he runs pell mell all over the yard at top speed - hilarious!
And he does want to play *all the time* - thank goodness for puppy naps!

(28,394 posts)We had a wonderful golden when our boys were growing up. He was always right with the kids, always ready to join the games.
He was big, too, nearly 100 lbs. They would lay on the floor and use him for a pillow. He was just the sweetest, most lovable big lug.
Wishing you and Otis many years of joy.

I am on my 2nd Golden, he was so precious and focused as a puppy, velcro dog all the way.
He is now 7 and I look at his baby pictures and gush.

(107 posts)I have two older Great Pyrenees dogs, both since they were puppies, and I will never forget how much time and energy it takes to raise puppies properly. But the end result is an awesome addition to your family with lots of laughs and memories...Congrats.

(6,151 posts)Wish he could come visit for a playdate with my girls.
But then they might fight over him. They're as bonded as littermates but both are extremely competitive over everything, so they don't always share. Well, food and beds, yes... but boys, probably not.
