Related: About this forumremember yesterday I said my cat was breathing funny?
Today, for the first time in my life I had to choose euthanasia as an option.
We brought him to the vet today.
They diagnosed him with FIP. Incurable. He only had days or weeks to live.
And now we're without our fat baby, Caesar Crookshanks Bullock.
He taught me how to be a cat person. And we will forever keep him in our hearts.

(53,939 posts)It is never easy to make that decision because we don't want to let them go, but we know we can't let them live in agony. He left his footprints on your heart, and those will never fade!

(1,542 posts)...losing a family member is never easy... we can only take solace in the fact that they are free of their pain and in a better place...
Freddie
(9,258 posts)We lost our very beloved Freddie (my DU alias) to FIP last fall. He had always been on the chubby side and when his belly started getting even bigger I didn't think much of it. Gradually he stopped coming upstairs and then stopped eating. His big belly was fluid. Took the vet 4 days of inpatient care and $3000 to diagnose him (not happy about that!) We took him home to give him some more time in his environment and had an appointment to put him to sleep a few days later but he went to the Bridge at home the day of the appointment. He was only 9. Freddie was a big orange tabby and the best cat ever.
We've since gotten 2 kittens and changed vets.
So sorry for the loss of your beloved fur child

(9,819 posts)I am sure your kitty is grateful to have been released from his sick body and is purring in paradise. Bless you for having the courage to let him go.
(edit to add: somehow I duplicated this post but self-deleted the other one)

(24,761 posts)FIP rapidly kills a cat and there was nothing you could do to save him. You had no other choice but to have him euthanized.
So sorry he's gone, but now he's in kitty heaven.

(15,220 posts)FIP is a horrible, horrid disease. We've had several cats in our rescue that have developed it. It's hard to diagnose and it's hard when you come to the realization that there is nothing more that can be done.
I am so sorry for your pain. I wish you peace and comfort.

(14,487 posts)Every time I know someone who loses a furbaby, I have the same thought... I'm so glad that baby had someone who loved them, when others are not as lucky. It hurts so much to lose them, because of the joy they bring to our hearts.

(10,345 posts)We were just going in to get some worms meds or something.
He'd been sick before and got through it just fine.
We had no idea the kind of curve ball we were driving to that day.
Thank you.
