Tomorrow I will release my Gracie cat from her pain and struggle.

In my ten years on DU, this is, IIRC, only my second OP, but I felt the need to share. Any of you familiar with the musical CATS will know about the Heavyside Layer. That is where I want my Gracie to go--the song keeps coming into my mind...Up past the Russell Hotel, Up Up Up Up to the Heavyside Layer...

Things will be better there, I know, and I hope she'll keep happy memories of her time with us, the love and care we've given her. She's a Russian Blue, about 15 years old, and has had a rather checkered past, none of which is her fault of course. I feel good, knowing we've made her last years safe and comfortable. But it's hard...We shall always miss her.

She's sleeping now, and in the morning I'll carry her gently to the arms of the vet who will make her passing a peaceful one. We've just lost a family member whose death came 'way too early. Clearly not on a par with losing Gracie, but still...sometimes things do pile on.

Didn't mean to go on for so long, but thanks to those who read and care. Forgive me my tears, and blessings to all.

1. Holding you and your Gracie in the Light.

I believe animals are here to teach us how to be human.

Gracie has done a wonderful job.

She will be in your heart forever, and when time gently blunts the sharpness of loss, you'll find her again there, and remember the joy.

soberly,
Bright

2. I am so so sorry.

I know how it hurts, as I have been through that several times.
Remember the good times with Gracie.
I have a Gracie too, and she's going on 14 and fading.
It's OK to cry.

When I am gone release me and let me go.
I have too many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears.
Be thankful for our wonderful years.

I gave to you my love, you can only guess . . .
how much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown,
but now it's time I traveled on alone.

So grieve a while for me if grieve you must.
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a time that we must part,
so bless the memories within your heart.

I won't be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me call, and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear.
All my love around you soft and clear.

And then when you must pass this way alone,
I'll greet you with a purr and say "Welcome Home!"

12. CurtEastPoint, I thank you.

This is such a moving and meaningful poem--I just printed it off and will keep it close to my heart, as I'll keep Gracie. Blessings to your Gracie, who will always be in your heart.

Thanks for saying it's OK to cry--'cause I can't seem to stop!

Best to you.

41. Tears are a gift of healing

A leaching away of anguish and suffering. The greater the leakage the larger the dry vessel is left behind inside.

Cry yourself a river, to be filled anew with a mountain of peace, love and comfort in a joining of the spirits of those you had believed to be lost to you, fore they live always in the tender and loving embrace your heart.

5. So sorry

My heart goes out to you, and to Gracie. Animals all have their own personalities. I have said goodbye to more than my share in this lifetime, their life span is too short. They DO know when they are loved and cherished, not all of them have families that treasure them. Gracie was a lucky little girl, and I am sure she knows it. I understand how it hurts, but the time comes when we have to love them enough to let them go.

Your tears are well warranted.

Our really old hound dog Floyd is also having real tough times, and will soon cross rainbow bridge, I fear, so I understand a little of what you're feeling. So sorry.

I'm so sorry to hear about Floyd, but know how fortunate he was to have you in his life, as you are to have had him in yours. The journey across the rainbow bridge is tough on those of us left behind, but the pain of loss is eased, knowing they have gone to such a wonderful place.

Blessings to you and Floyd.

25. 'Go on' as long as you want and need. We are here for you. This story I tell you because it gave me

great comfort and I send that comfort to you.

My sister's dog Hootch was going to be let free on a Saturday and that Friday when I went home, I paused wondering if I could pet him and tell him how much he gave me too, the love and friendship, the joy and comedy. I did. I wnt to him and he was unnaturally peppy and happy. I hugged him, I thanked him profusely for his greatness in my life and then I went home.

The next day about 1:30 I was sort of drifting off on the couch. I was in that twilight space between truly awake and asleep. I felt a hard punch on my chest, then opened my eyes totally awake. I saw a huge black dog nose, sort of fish eye like and the happiest, merriest, twinklingest brown eyes ever. I felt that those eyes told me words ... hi. I love you. I wish you could know how happy and well and joy-filled I am. Then I blinked and the brown face, the happy eyes and the black nose was gone. The spot where he punched me with his nose, something he did when he was with us in the physical world was mildly sore for two days or so.

He came to me to tell me that he was free, completely happy, completely well and with us in just another form. He was there, he was with us. He didn't leave us just because he changed. I asked Chris when he was let go and it was 1:30.

Your baby will stay by your side and never leave you. Love never ends. Love is not deterred by distance and circumstances. Every time you think of him, he will be there. I was reading the books by a forensic pathologist named Janis Amatuzio. Over her decades of work she has seen strange things and some of them included animals. She saw one man nearing death who had his great dane come to him and sleep on his bed, a dog long gone from the world. She has two books that I will include that are fascinating and may comfort you. She and other pathologists discuss this stuff now at conferences because she isn't the only one who notices this stuff.
Your baby will be with you through this. I wish you so much love and peace.

Forever Ours and Beyond Knowing by Janis Amatuzio, MD Published by New World Library

Take care. Time will be your friend now. Listen hard. Your baby will let you know they are around. I hear the sound of my dog's nails on the hard wood floor now and again, usually when I have a lot of stress. None of the times I have heard it were my dogs and cats anywhere but sitting on the bed beside me.

It is always hard. We lost our Tony a few months back and it broke my heart to have my beloved pet die in my arms. Grief is grief and how we mourn is who we are.

I know that it's never easy to lose our babies. Our first two were Jelli and Mac, named after Jellicle and Macavity. They're long gone now but I still cry when I think of them. Got me crying now. But they'll be there, Jelli and Mac, Sandy and Suki and your Grace, up, up to the Heaviside Layer and we'll see them all again, in the place where no shadows fall.

37. Prophet, yours is the perfect response.

Today I held onto Gracie as she ascended to the Heavyside Layer, singing the words as she left--"Up up up past the Russell Hotel..." The vet who so gently assisted the journey knew about Grizzabella and all the wonderful Cats characters, and she affirmed that, like Grizzabella, Gracie was going to that better place. How heartening to know that your Jelli and Mac along with Sandy and Suki were there to greet her. I shall always miss my Gracie and won't soon stop crying, but what a joy to know we'll see each of them again, huh? The place where no shadows fall...beautifully said!

Blessings to you!

I think everyone here has been through this heartbreaking loss of a beloved pet and more than once. It never gets easier, but not one of use would trade what we've been blessed with in our fur babies for all the world.

Peace and healing to you as you join you beloved cat for her final journey. The last act of love you can give her.
