the most stupid, foolish, moronic state in the Union, isn't it???
(Too bad it has so much competition for that 'honor.')

they are an invasive species. there has been a lot of debate in illinois about them.
i think the fact that there is still an empty niche from the carolina parakeet helps them, they are fitting into some empty spaces. but they are tiny birds with big ecological footprints.
escaped pets are a serious problem. maybe gizmo is too old to cause trouble, but it is a serious problem.

and has been owned by her for 26 years. At no time has it's footprint destroyed any part of the environment. Your footprint is much greater than this parakeet's, no matter how environmentally conscious you are. Gizmo is not a serious problem. PA is overreaching. And as to all the ecological problems attributed to Monk Parakeets, most of them are just false.

they usually go down in flames regardless of the threat. people love their pets, but everyone who owns an exotic pet has to take responsibility for the damage done by the pet trade they support.
i agree most claims about the quakers are exaggerated, but environmental destruction all along the line in the pet trade is enormous. from the damage of acquiring them, trafficking them, to releasing them when the cops are on your trail, or your aviary is blown over in a storm.
this little bird should have been grandfathered in. but the problem is real. heartbreaking, but real.
